Semi heat #1 on now - Slater vs JJ - Slater ahead by 9pts with 12min to go. next up is CJ Hobgood vs Mick http://www.volcomfijipro.com/live/ Watch the Heats on Demand for yesterday's incredible waves.
I got my wife to watch the finals with me and the first thing she asked was "Who the hell is the guy with the nasaly voice? He's a farking idiot!" I died laughing.
Lot of bashing Cote, and for good reason, but really - Dave Wassel is the worst surf commentator ever. To be fair, very few of the people thrown on at the various contests are any good at all, but Wassel was the only one to break through and make me mute the contest, only turned the sound back on when I could see a guy was up and riding.
could not agree more. Chris Cote is a gem compared to wassel. worst broadcaster ever. just doesnt know when to shut up and use his brain before actually speaking. does kelly ever lose in a final??? the guy is a machine. its like once he gets to the quarters he just revs up more and more and can not be stopped.
I'll take Wassel over Cote any day. Probably because he's proven himself in the water. It raises the whole "bro-cast vs. broadcast" issue that may or may not be addressed by Zosea as they take over. While it would be great to have seasoned professional broadcasters in the booth, I think you need the guys with the intimate knowledge of the surf and competition. I love when Occy is in the booth for example, even though he's obviously not the consummate broadcast professional. We just have to take the bad with the good and see who develops to be the best in the booth as the webcasting continues to develop.
There's definitely a balance that needs to be struck. Occy is great, when Dorian comes in and calls at certain events he's good, Joe Turpel does a pretty nice job even though he wasn't calling the Volcom event, even Alex Gray who definitely trends to the "bro-cast" is so much better than Wassel. Wassel turned every heat into a pissing match between the U.S. and Australia, it was intolerable. And he mancrushes so hard on any Hawaiian in the water no conversation about any other surfer can take place. Generally, lots of the Aussies seem to be better, not sure why that is. I'm not calling for an outright move to polished broadcasting, I think keeping the surfers in the booth is definitely important - but Wassel, specifically, just sucks.
OK, if y'all were decision-makers at Zosea, who would your top 5 commentator picks be? Here's mine: Barton Lynch (Legend, calls it like it is) Taylor Knox (Very professional, knows what he's talking about) Dino Andino (Very professional, knows what he's talking about) Ben Bourgeois (NC represent and did a great job commentating at the Rip Curl PR event) Occy (Legend)
I'd have a hard time with that, just cause there are so many people up there through the course of the events, but here's a few. I think Ronnie Blakey does a pretty nice job in the booth, occy and barton for sure. Mike Parsons is solid. Last spot toss-up between Dino, Taylor, and Turple - Turple is a loser, but is pretty good at actually calling the wave as its ridden, and you need someone in that role when Blakey is taking his break. On a separate but similar note, Jason Shibata was straight painful in the post-heat interviews. Maybe that could be a good role for Wassel? Keep the stoke, but in small doses?
