today i went wakeboarding behind assateague really close to the surf. i was riding some waves and launching off waves it was amazing even though the surf was small. does anybody know the legality of that?
that sounds fun. there is a law for ocean city that says that any motorized vehicle has to be so far away from the beach, structure or any other person. Something along those lines. I forget exactly how far away, like hundred yards or something. if you are in assateague and no one is around you, I wouldnt worry about it.
Wakeboarding or Freeboarding? DNR is probably more in control of the back bay behind Assateague, but even then, the general rule is 100 yards from fixed elements (shoreline, bouys, channel markers) and other craft. To go any closer than that wouldn't be safe, especially without proper gear. i.e. required life jacket, spotter, length of tow rope- 60' for tubes, 70' for skis and wakeboards- About a week ago two kids anchored about 100 yards from the beach at the OC Inlet to go surfing and the US Coast Guard came up and chased them away. I didn't hear the reason, but just that they couldn't do that. I can't fathom what US law they may have violated, unless homeland security was their reasoning. Tilly used to park there all the time. My how times have changed. If you want quality wakeboarding, I'd recommend the Pocomoke River. Pretty flat water even on a windy day, the tricky part is staying 100 yards from the shoreline. We went freeboarding (using a fish surfboard) and a Mach 10 bodyboard (w/ stringers) last Friday instead of our usual wakeboard. The best part was the 84 degree water. It's not altogether a secret spot, but weekdays are typically VERY uncrowded, and of course you have to have a boat.
yea i have been in competitions on the pocomoke river. it is usually flat except for some mid-days. i was pretty far down the ocean side of assateague so i was pretty unseen except for the sharks. also i dont think they care too much about staying 100 yds or feet from the shoreline in the pocomoke
