Yesterday the surf was fun, but i made the stupid mistake of not bringing my gloves, the water temp had to be close to 50 even. Will it still be that temp wednesday/thursday?
those S/SW currents are the worst for water temps in the mid atlantic, because it is the optimal current direction to cause upwelling of deeper, colder water. Looks like same type of swell for mid week, so I'd expect similar water temps. In Delmarva, I was surfing near an inlet, and it was really, really warm, because the warm bay water was mixing in - prob could have trunked it. I later then surfed another spot and it was prob 10 degrees colder. It was a very dramatic difference.
Aren't temps supposed to be at the 3/2 wetsuit stage now for the NJ area? Whats going on?! Where the f*** is global warming?!?!
Me and a few buddies when out yesterday.....I had my boots and gloves cause i knew it would be cold from the direction of the swell. My buddy went in without gloves or boots. he lasted like 20 minutes. We called him peg leg for the rest of the day. so funny he couldn't even walk. The water was 50 here in central NJ. Comon summer i need to shed this neoprene.
oc wasn't too bad. i get cold easily but i had a 4/3 and 5 mil boots and was fine. my hands were a little cold at frist. there was a bunch of different suits out there. short legs, short sleeves, 5/4/3s, basically anything you could think of. one guy was talking about going out in his shorts and a 1 mil top.
sandy hook buoy says 62. 44025 (long island) buoy says 60. fairly normal temps I'd say, just the upwelling that made it so cold yesterday.
this weekend in (OC) there were people without wet suits!! I was still cold with an full suit. I wanted gloves and boots. Idk how you people take the cold.
I wore a 3/2 That doesn't fit me. Time to go to the surf shop and pick up some old models for winter and spring again
Ouch We saw multiple chicas and chicos in the water with their hands up and out of the water...i guess trying to warm-up...yikes...we'd rather look odd wearing gloves than being uncomfortable Give it a few more weeks in NJ...then, noeprene-free!!!
i always keep my suit, gloves and boots in the car handy. Last year after it was warm for a month, crazy upwelling happened and a suit and boots were neccessary..so i learned my lesson. I can't wait to shake the gloves but its still so damn cold. I saw a guy wearing nothing but shorts out at belmar...nuts
i was fine in monmouth county(Long Branch) on sunday..sure i was a little cold with that south swell but all i wore was a spring shorty and one of my buddys just went in boardshorts.....we were fin....but people were acting crazy seeing us in those suits...its so much easier to surf without all that crap on......its almost summer!!!
I wouldn't have minded a hood Sunday. I was taking pics so I was constantly under water. I had a big head ache when I got out.
I'm home in NJ visiting my family... good thing I brought my 3/2, gloves, and boots ... they've been dry for quite some time now. Water temps in southern NC are well into the 70s back to "wintertime" ... I can't say I've missed the cold water up here. Waves break a little thicker though than where I normally surf so it's kind of nice... almost like the outer banks in March.
