How come whenever there is sizable surf, there always seems to sw winds of at least 20 on long island? Is this coincidence or is there a reason for this?
frontal systems that skirt up the coast from the south can be big wave producing systems. If the storm system hugs the coast as it heads north, then Long Island can get skunked with only southerly or westerly winds On the other hand there are plenty of times, when the storms head further out to sea, and the winds shift N or NW. Its all dependent upon the track of the storms as the move north and away from the coast.
