I get you. I think we're on the same page. Like i said, it really depends on your area or school. When i went to high school no one ever told me i had the choice to go learn a trade or some other skill that would help me start a career. I only had one meeting with a guidance counseler when looking for colleges. Now i work HVAC/R. And I'm happy. But i took every back road to get here. I have a criminal justice degree that ill never did anything with, then had to go back to school for HVAC once i realized learning a trade was the way to go. I had to figure it all out by myself. Which I'm not really complaining about. I got there. But if these schools sat kids down and put the options right in front of them, I'm sure more would bite. I could of learnt HVAC in high school in the boces program i mentioned. Would of saved a solid 6+ years of college. But no one ever told me i could. So how would i know? Its "offered" but not really. My options were never laid out in front of me. So although it was offered, i had no idea. I think if more schools offered these types of programs and sat there students down and talked to them about there options, honestly, it'd be a good thing. Tell them that there is nothing wrong with learning a trade or some other skill.
,National Union of Teachers say, "Teach toddlers about transgender issues" http://www.telegraph.co.uk/educatio...ansgender-issues-national-union-teachers-say/ When I went to school there was like 2 maybe 3 kids that were gay. Now everywhere I go I not only say queers but he-shes or she-hes or I don't even think they know. I don't think it's because it's more acceptable, I think alot has to do with teaching young kids about sexual orientation issues at an age when kids don't even think about those things. In essence confusing them. Sh*t man I had sex ed for 1 semester in 10th or 11th grade. Personally that was enough to teach me to keep it under wraps. I didn't need anyone to teach me I liked girls. This is a huge reason why I think public schools are sh*t.
I LOVE the job I do now, so no regrets. Like teachers, I get summer's off, only I'm usually off from mid-April until mid-September, with the exception of a few weeks here and there in between. In Jersey though, I can't believe what they pay teachers and even town cops. My buddy's now ex wife is a teacher and I found out she makes $102K grand a year! The salaries are public knowledge and you can look them up. He was a stay at home dad before he walked out on them and moved to the Caribbean (true story) and now I realize how they were so comfortable financially. I can see she's already bought a Summer townhouse down the shore since he left them. Before I found out what her salary was, I was like ''DA FUQ?''. My other buddy's sister is a nurse at a public school and gets $102K something grand also! She's been a nurse for the district for over 30 years now, but that's way more than they nurses get when they work in the hospitals or clinics. Then my best friend's sister is a teacher and he looked up her salary, which was significantly smaller and only $50k something grand. She's only been teaching a few years though. I know they don't get paid like this in most states though. Back in the day, being a schoolteacher (and a cop too) were considered really underpaid jobs for the education they required and having to go to college for. You didn't even need college to be a cop not too long ago. I'm not sure if those salaries these days are something in New Jersey and other high cost of living states/areas or if this is a sign of the times.
Teaching is a thankless completely undervalued profession. Good for you for sticking with I did 3 years and said f dat noise.
The sole reason public schools suck is because they are run by government and teachers are unionized. Solution: close Department of Education, fire all union teachers, and turn education back to the locals.
I THINK YOU' RE THE FATHER OF ONE OF MY KIDS...... A guy goes to the supermarket and notices an attractive woman waving at him. She says hello. He's rather taken aback because he can't place where he knows her from. So he says, "Do you know me? "To which she replies, "I think you' re the father of one of my kids. "Now his mind travels back to the only time he has ever been unfaithful to his wife and says, My God, are you the stripper from my bachelor Party that I made love to on the pool table with all my buddies watching while your partner whipped my butt with wet celery? "She looks into his eyes and says calmly......... "No, I'm your son's teacher."
Wife is a teacher (one of the good ones). Some of the goonery she tells me regarding other teachers (union thugs) would make you sick. It's like, how are these teachers not fired!!?? wtf! For the most part however, the teachers in her school are all good, caring, professional educators. It's a great job (benefits, time off, etc.) but definitely not easy handling today's youths with all their issues and having your hands tied as a teacher when it comes to discipline. Some sad stories told over family dinner on a daily basis. Some really flubsed up families out there. Kids are fooked from jump street.
It's true that the Union protects useless slugs. OTOH, it also protects people who would otherwise be unfairly terminated because they don't necessarily kowtow to the "company line" or other such BS. If Universities were a "Right To Work" organization, what do you think would happen to "conservative" professors at schools like Cal Berkeley?
Here in NC our teachers get totally sh!t on. The gubment ended teaching fellowships and we have one of the lowest pay rates in the country for teachers. I think we are like 48 out of 50 when it comes to student performance. Thank fuk I grew up far north of here.
also, KR, lets say you been there 20 years and the principals niece just graduated, without a union, you be gone and nepotism would reign supreme
Exactly. There's so many possible scenarios, and as an Executive Board member for AFGE, I have seen more sh!t than you could shake a stick at. On both ends, labor and management. Horrible unspeakable stuff. Seriously, I got so sick of it that I tapped out like a little b!tch and went into management. There's a reason they call management "The Dark Side". Bunch of ruthless selfish power hungry pencil d!cks. But yeah, Unions are bad, but a necessary evil IMHO
I teach pretty well, well over twenty years in the same district, no bs, and i am the first one they'd get rid of. I make too much. I am not a scared pc loser. The union is a necessary evil. Most teachers in my district are pretty good. Easy to criticize us, but where are all these great new teachers going to come from? I think these idiot people have parents who are crap. My son graduated west point out of toms river schools. Parents.
