I surfed last week (warmer day) in a 5yr old Xcel 3mm suit with no boots and got fairly cold after an hour. I'm heading out mid morning on Sat so now I'm considering throwing on either (a) a older hand me down 5mm suit that i've never worn before or (b) my 3mm with booties (and possibly golves). Will the 5mm be overkill for the current water temps/air temps this Saturday? If the air was the same as last week then i would give the 3mm another try but looks like the air will be a fair amount colder. Just curious of your thoughts. ________ SecretSmile
Yes 5mm is overkill but that doesnt mean you wont be happy you had in on.. Do you have a newer or warmer 3.2 and thin booties would be the call.. But if all you have is a 3.2 that you were cold in last week then goto the 5mm I was fine wed thurs with 3.2 and no boots but Sunday I went out with my old 3.2 (see through seems) and old booties and got cold after and hour..So this weekend i'll wear my newer 3.2 and probably my old 3m booties but ill bring my 5mm so if the waves are still pumping and I get cold ill change. And if its overkill ill think of it as training for winter got to get used to the 5mm for the solid winter surf anyway...I surf like shi t when I get cold so I would rather have over kill but no gloves bro thats just being a kook...
yeah I would 5 mil it in the morning and possibly 3/2 it in the after noon depending on the temp and how the wind is. I was out last sunday in a 3/2 and boots and was fine I got a little bit of a chill with the wind would start to get heavy but thats about it
i'm good enough with my 3/2, and some boots which will be the first time with boots since may for me. won't do gloves just yet. not for me, but others have different preferences. gloves for me usually come on at 50 degree water temperatures. either 50 degree water temperatures of 35-40 degree air temperatures. boots are about 60 degree water temperature for me, and any kind of suit it's gotta be 65 or a little warmer water temp, but really cool air temps. it all varies.
Stick it!! Some of us actually have work responsibilities that, given the daylight hours this time of year, are not condusive to surfing during the week. I've been at it for over 20 years and go out every chance I get...before work, after work, and weekends throughout the year as time and conditions permit.
Agreed. 3/2 & boots, maybe a light pair of gloves. Use common sense...if you're cold in one suit...upgrade. And enough with this will I be cold crap.
