I am going surfing this weekend in Rockaway NY. The weather is suppose to be 60 and sunny but I only have a 4/3 xcel. I have booties, gloves and a hood but the water temp is 43. Will I be fine in a 4/3 or too cold? I just would like some feedback thanks
if you have good booties and gloves youl be fine. I have an O'Neil mutant 4-3 with attached hood and its kept me warm last winter and this winter better than my old quicksilver 5 mil. I also have the O'Neil mutant 6-5-4 booties and they are perfect for northeast. Good luck nice waist high swell in the forecast
I was out last Saturday with a 4/3, 3mil gloves, and 7mil boots, with a hood cap i guess you call it, and I got pretty dam cold around an hour. But is was kinda windy and in the low 40's. Im thinking in the 50's or so you will last longer. Actually only my head was cold after a few consecutive duck dives but my hands were prolly the worst, other than that I was ok.
The temps and conditions you are describing are on the upper end of what we've had lately in New England and it's felt refreshing out there in the 4/3. Wind could be a variable in how warm or cold you feel.
I think people with small bladders tend to urinate more, thus keeping them warmer. I know I am warmer after filling my wetsuit to the brim with urine. Also it gives it that classic wetsuit funk smell.
I surfed those water temperatures all winter here in VB with a 4/3 Mutant, 5mm boots, and 3mm gloves ... Typical sessions were around 2-2.5 hours before I got too cold to surf. I think you will be fine even without peeing in your suit every half-hour
dude,if you want to surf up here just get a 5 mil suit.so many of these threads.if it's good and you're stoked 4/3 will be doable.if you're sitting sans adrenaline you'll freeze.
