Was surfing yesterday morning off the jetty in Rockaway Beach, and spotted a whale jumping way out in the ocean. Everyone talked about it and was pretty cool to see, no one had ever seen a whale while surfing before. The whale disappeared until about an hour later, directly out from us to where we were all looking for the swell to be coming, maybe 200-300 yards away, this enormous whale bursts out of the ocean, and comes back down with a huge splash, leading to a simultaneous "HOLY S%$^" from everybody out there. It continued to do this as it moved east, giving us all a show. About 30 people came running from the beach onto the jetty armed with cameras to try and take pictures. Was pretty cool to see. Anyone else see it? Has there been many whales around?
you mean none of the dfd hipster kooks that come in from brooklyn, that have no clue what lineup etiquette is, have seen them before. the rest of us have seen plenty of them this time of year.... especially at the irish circle or conolly's. lol.
I surf this time of year every year and I have never seen them, so I guess not all of us. I also do a ton of fishing and have never seen them then
Hey out on beach this morning, saw that whale. Totally awesome, breaching & jumping out of water. He hung around for good 45 mins, maybe longer I had to split.
