1993-1995....man what a wierd couple years that was for music. Nirvana had punched a truck sized hole through the hair metal crap, gave a burst of oxygen to music, and suddenly there were a thousand bands and if they could produce an edgy rock song that was even remotely catchy, they cashed in nicely.

The Verve, The Vervepipe... 7 Mary 3, Spacehog, Local H, Better than Ezra... And another few hundred bands from that time period. Saw some of those bands with Filter.

Filter head honcho Richard Patrick had certainly paid his dues by the time Short Bus exploded on the scene. As a long serving, touring member of NIN, Patrick was urged to go solo by Trent Reznor after approaching Reznor with some songs he thought NIN should record. Fun factoid, Richard's brother is actor Robert Patrick B.K.A. the T-1000 Terminator in T2!

I'll add God Lives Underwater and Stabbing Westward to this list of industrial tinged "pop" acts who hit their stride in the early 90's. This was "machine music" that pushed the boundaries of metal while at the same time was unabashedly derivative of disco's pulse. This sound definitely had it's moment in the sun. I have always believed this scene was the American response to the British "big beat" sounds of acts like The Prodigy and Chemical Brothers from that same era.

Featuring one of the most memorable album covers ever, GLU came roaring out of Pennsylvania's back woods and took no prisoners. Malevolent electronics married to searing guitar dares you to share in their pain.

I definately wasn't referring to the industrial sounding bands from that period. I wasn't a huge fun, although saw NIN around 1990 and enjoyed the show.

I'm talking about the twentysomething white guys, one-word-band-name-plucked-from-thesaurus, two jangly guitars-bass-drums, quiet verse/loud chorus formula alt-rock bands that just seemed to proliferate during that few years. CBS Crewsby named a few, here are some more:
Bush, Sponge, Collective Soul, Everclear, Eels, Fastball, Fuel...

I'm sure lots of them paid their dues, but a lot of music sounding a lot like the rest of the music.
