So I went from a thrash metal phase into a 60's garage rock phase, mostly from a compilation album from the early 70's called nuggets. Then there were albums after, Nuggets 2, (British and American versions I guess?) and Pebbles which is a series of 60's British garage rock. I always loved the old stuff, but besides the usual "Louie Louie" or Dick Dale, Link Wray stuff(and of course ? and The Mysterians, 96 Tears, love that tune) I didn't know much else. There are a lot of familiar bands and tunes on these albums, some that are more weird or psychedelic than garage, but so many I had never heard of that are pure gold, awesome tunes, from bands with goofy names like the Sparkles or Kenny And The Kasuals. Tunes that pre date the MC5 or Stooges, and just as heavy.
In my top five records of all time. It's been on heavy rotation for me for decades. Richard Hell is a genious, and his band is TIGHT. Robert Quine (RIP) was an amazing guitar player.
Yeah, that's pretty rockin LB. Awesome tune. I could just imagine being a teen when these first came out, getting it on a 45 and putting it on the turntable for the first time. Then grabbing my leashless 11 ft balsaboard to slide uncrowded waves. Where's my time machine.
I remember taping this song off the radio around 1982 when I was maybe 9 or 10 and listening to it over and over again. Awesome magazine, great movie and soundtrack.
LOL, my mom used to work at the Lawrence Welk retirement home right off the 15. I brought a hot date to California for a wedding once and she insisted we go to the Lawrence Welk museum there. How could you say no to moms? The girls first time to California and we spend our first morning at the museum, followed by a terrible Chinese restaurant in Escondido ( 5 bucks, all you can eat) for lunch. I made it up to her, she loved La Jolla and the gas lamp district in SD.
My MomMom (how the fuck do you even write that??) used to watch Lawrence Welk religiously, along side one of her sons, my Uncle Donnie. Uncle Donnie was also a big fan of Ponderosa back in the day. Good memories.
