anyone surfed ecuador (mompiche, puerto lopez, pedernales, montenita or canoa) along the ruta del sol? leaving on a jet plane monday am for tres semanas. any info would be muy *****in' danke
Yeah we tried some surfing in norther Ecuador about a year and a half ago without much luck due to location. We were in the northern Esmeraldas province, Boards were very hard to come by. Tried surfing Atacames, it can be a fun party town though very shady. There are no boards to be had there other than an occasional foamy, don't waste time here. After that we tried mompiche, there are boards avail there though very very beat up. Problem we ran into is it just wasn't breaking the day we went, though it did look like it could hold a good break. Other problem there is it is very dirty and even water didn't look overly appealing. I never made it down to Montanita but from what I have heard that is the area you would have the best luck. I would steer away of the northern coast, there is just not much available and driving anywhere is hard and time consuming.
