It was only the top layer of fiberglass that delaminated. The bottom layer, which is epoxy, is still intact. So no, I didn't apply paint thinner directly to the foam. THAT would be REALLY dumb. Also didn't use any fiberglass cloth or q-cell although the q-cell may have been a good idea. The area is so thin that I thought I could get away with just a couple of layers of resin. And finally, no Jesus you can't have my board. Not yet at least...
lies...neither duct tape nor wax shoved in a ding are water repellant. clear packing tape, on the other hand, is ok...on smaller dings. if you value your surfboard, never, ever use duct tape as a temporary repair.
Could you guys just get a room? The joke is getting kind of old. Sonfollower: "donate the board to a kid" Yankee: "you're a child molester" How many threads is the shelf life for this routine?
Tsk, tsk...lighten up, Francine. We don't judge your posts, who are you to judge anyone else. Oh wait, forgot; WWSD. Because you are, of course, holier than thou, thee, then & that. Just ask ya....you'll tell us.
Yes... and yes. If any poly resin got down under that layer of epoxy and glass, the styrene in the resin will literally dissolve the polystyrene (EPS) foam... if it is, indeed, polystyrene foam. There's always the possibility of epoxy being used over polyurethane foam, which of course is fine. After looking at the pictures, there's a lot of issues with this board, including water damage along the stringer. Looks like mold growing in the foam, which is pretty common with old, waterlogged boards. I wouldn't invest much into repairing it, except for sanding down that resin you added, and putting a layer or two of cloth over the area. Then sand that down, and paint some resin over that. Sand it smooth and ride it.
Thanks zaGaffer/LBCrew! Words of wisdom. There's an extra layer of fiberglass that didn't delaminate so I think I'm safe with the foam not dissolving. Also, not too worried strength b/c it's the bottom of the board and it's already got a layer of fiberglass. At this point, I think I'm just gonna plow ahead and finish it off with a little more resin. Like you guys said, her days are numbered. I'll follow up and let you know when she finally kicks the bucket...
So I said I would follow up when my board finally kicked the bucket and here we are. A few weeks ago I traded boards with a friend in order to try out her new longboard. She was paddling out on my board, tried turtling under a thigh high wave and it snapped right in half. Now I have a chunk of foam covered in fiberglass that’s 6’2” long, 22.25” wide and 2.75” thick. I started peeling back the fiberglass last night and it’s quite the process, but I’m finding that a paint scraper and wire snips can do the trick. Any suggestions on what kind of shape I can make out of this? I would think a mini simmons would be the most obvious, but I’m really feeling a single fin egg shape. What do you guys think?
