so i just moved and started a new M-F full time job. after some car problems and being out of work for almost a month while we were moving im now pretty much broke. i live about 1.5-2 hours from the water now unfortunately and am in serious withdrawl without my usual daily surf session.

i have $200 to last me until october 1st when ill get my first paycheck which will be pretty decent sized, enough to get by at least. i know most people would just sit around and hold onto every last penny but im dying to surf and cant help the urge to drive out for some surf this weekend (about $50 in gas).

so what would you do, hold onto the money and wait it out or just say f it and go have a fun session and forget about all your worries?

i'm gonna have to agree w/ what everyone else has said...use the plastic & get some waves. you'll be useless & cranky if you don't get some quality surf.

in a way, i kinda miss those days & envy the O.P...nothing quite like making a midnight road trip to hatteras or somewhere, sleeping in your truck, waking up w/ the sunrise & being one of the first people in the line-up for a good swell.
enjoy that freedom while you have it...it goes away pretty quickly as life catches up.

I wouldn't worry about it til Friday. It's too far out to tell if the conditions are even gonna be good. If on Friday it looks like it's gonna be epic, go. If instead it looks like it's just big and closed out with an occasional make-able corner, I would wait for the next one.

Been there many times around this time of year. Surf Surf Surf. Just be frugal. Share a ride. bring your own food. I make macaroni and mix in sweet potatoes and stuff. Watch the swell chart and pick the best day. Surfing fuels life and makes the job a whole lot easier. Better to walk with a calm smile on your face than be bummed. You can make it.

I feel your pain I lived and had a job 1 1/2 from the beach...not so much in distance as in Hampton Roads VA traffic. Surfing was a chore sometimes but I had to get in my sessions when it was good or decent or if I was really just jonesing. Save up the cash and take the work experience for a few years and use it to move on to something better or at least closer to the surf... 3 years of teaching low income in a little town where the biggest employer is a meat packing plant sucked. The only surfer for miles, I stuck out like a sore thumb...my co workers would break out the gay surf lingo that they learned from the Brady Bunch Hawaii Vacation episode every time they saw me...Ugh... but the experience has opened doors for me and now my job is so close to my home break I go home and get my board and surf during lunch...VICTORY! Hang in there till your break comes and get the waves whenever you can to keep you sane till then.

I moved to Michigan to go to school and only surfed 4 times in 4 years. Makes you question your own identity... who am I? What am I? I'd see my board leaning against the wall in the corner and be like, "I'm not a surfer." Bloody depressing, to say the least. So I took up mountain biking and got into it heavy. I found I could get a very similar feeling to surfing, flying through a single track, picking a line, and using every muscle and sense I had to make a perfect run. And you know it's perfect when you get into that sort of Zen state and can't even remember the moment when it's over.

So find a healthy substitute. Two hours to the beach needs to be saved for when you know it's good, and that' won't happen often enough to keep you fit... both physically and mentally.

Life changes... brings you back around. Don't fight it.

what will you remember more? Surfing this swell or sitting home and counting your $200?

I think you should call Suzy Orman on this one...

    What do you wanna buy?

Spend $50 on gas to go surfing this weekend.

    Show me the money!

    Savings: $200
    Retirement: $0
    Assets: a couple surfboards
