Its fresh stagnant river water. The ocean gets jet streams so it isnt all affected by the outside temperature.

the lowest ive been in has to be low 50s or high 40s water and a air temp of 30 mid winter i think. the surf wasnt that bad i just wanted to see the ocean so i went.

Smaller bodies of water such as rivers and bays will get colder much faster in the winter than larger bodies of water such as an ocean or a large lake. Just as they will warm up much faster in the summer.

The water was in the low 40's. And, I was in a 4/3 as well. No issues. It was fun surfing glass in the snow.

Lol...but its dumb. Should get at least a 4/3... preferably a 5/4/3 or 6/5/4 for the winter... you'll thank yourself when you do.

More power to you my dude...but no need for it?!? It's ****ing 20 degrees out... get yourself a quiver of suits.

    I have 2 spring suits, a 3/2, a 4/3 (that is old and worn out) and a 6/5/4.

You have 4 or 5 wetsuits but nothing thicker than a 3/2? That doesn't make sense to me.

    Really?

So, I am originally from MD. I used to go to OCMD all summer long. Can't say that I have ever been in the water there in the winter.

I live in San Diego now. I have for 7 years. I surf every day out here all year round. Winter is the best surf around here.

My girlfriend and I are thinking of moving back to the beach somewhere on the east coast (Mid-Atlantic) so we can be closer to our families in Baltimore.

Virginia Beach has caught my eye. Statistically, it gets more swell throughout the year than OCMD does.

But those 38 degree water temps in feb and march scare me. I know a lot of guys say "If your not a wuss, then you go out all year here"

But how true is that? I mean, in february/march, if a clean swell rolls through, how many guys are actually on it.

    Seems crazy to me.

And I know that Wrightsville/Wilmginton stays up in the mid to high 40s at it lowest point. So, Wrightsville etc. caught my eye. But that is an extra 3 hours south of MD....

So, Is is thinkable to be a year round waterman in Virginia Beach? Or does every one hang up their 6mils once it breaks below 45 or so...??????

I have to make a correction here... VB doesn't get more swell than anywhere in the Mid Atlantic!! However you are a 1-2 hr drive from Hatteras, which is the claim to fame for virginia beach locals.
