This thread was inspired by DPSUP who got me excited to watch THICKER THAN WATER... and although I'm not a (big) fan of Jack Johnson, ANYTHING is better than the music that accompanies MOST self-produced surf movies... be that speed metal (often used when the waves are tiny what??) , or reggae (which I like--its just that its never good reggae on surf vids), or the wonderful music of "dude check out my friends band!!"... Usually I just click the sound off and turn up whatever british invasion / Thin Lizzy /Coltrane record I happen to have going on at the time. So basically if you want to make a killer video and you're under 30...don't use music off of your IPOD...steal some of your stoner uncle's music. The rest of the surfing world will thank you:)

I usually mute the surf vid and have a song playing in the background on youtube.some songs go better than the actual soundtrack of the surf vid.for instance,i watched a mavs video the other day with led zeppelin levee break song and everytime the music got slow the surf would be slow motion.also London calling by the clash, london is drowning and I,i live by tha riveeeeeeeerrrr

The most puzzling is the electronic-house-dub-party crap.

The soundtrack of First Chapter worked well and is full of sick jams.... sometimes I put it on while completing perfunctory tasks, like cleaning or laundry, and manage to get stoked nonetheless.

Step Into Liquid had some interesting segments for sure, but the horrid soundtrack of that film destroyed my ability to enjoy it.... big budget vid, but felt as if the music was chosen by the DJ of someone's third wedding. WEAK.

I've always found it strange that surfing vids have crap music... especially when compared to skate vids. I'm no surf vidiot, but crap soundtracks seem to be the norm rather than exception. I was introduced to a lot of great music through skate vids, which were a gold mine for legit bad-ass tunes through the 90's and early 2000's. Rap, thrash, punk, classical.... from Pink Floyd to the Descendents....

Maybe it's because the act of skating can be heard in the video, thus inspiring (or forcing) vid-makers to thoughtfully choose high-qual tunes that accentuate the practice. Whereas, in surfing, you usually don't hear anything, and thus some ecstacy-gobbling D-baggins will not hesitate to throw on the same electro-jam that he fistpumped to all through the previous night. Or some mediocre sub-Nickelback rural hard rock played by a buddy band...

Perhaps if surf vids go more go-pro (footy-wise), sound can be included, and the 'skate-vid effect' will have a positive impact on the sad history of surf-vid music. Or perhaps they should put a small mic on the board and sync it up.

I nominate Ryan7 to raise the bar on this most thoroughly disappointing state of affairs.

    Lets hope not.

Brian Conley's POV barrel riding video is great.

Board-mounted camera pointed at surfer's face, not so much. it really doesn't matter what music is playing.

yeah I saw that vid the other day and I remember thinking how the music sucked. but then again, when I wrote the initial rap sucks thing I was thinking of us regular people not surfing's version of spider man!

That clip is sick and would make showtunes seem like beats you oughtta be bumpin in your ride. The sped up pace looks crazy. I'm not gonna say all rap is good or all surf vids should have rap but if they do, they need to be like this one with lyrics that say "I'm in a barrell" when JJ's actually in a barrell.

    Game. Blouses.

+1 to the "check out my friend's band!" comment

music? That's just a plus. How about the 1 minute of intro's for a 2 and a half minute video? Lame city. Nobody cares who you are. In a real video you have to locate kelly by his baldness. In most home videos I get all but a social security number of the surfers. Not necessary.

And slow motion. Just stop that. Please. It gives me a headache.

On the topic of Ryan. You should have brought wayne and Jesus with you to spice up the footage.

Whatever happened to fast punk/hardcore in surf movies? Now its either crappy slow hipster crap or reggae. I am jaded.

People these days dont have any taste in music and most of their bands suck as a result. ... that is IF they even play an instrument.

I was watching a VHS transfer of a bodyboarding video from '94 on vimeo called Violent Grace, it had an AWESOME punk-rock soundtrack... unfortunately it disappeared off vimeo.

Now are we calling all of the rap music genre "that crap" or is "that crap" specific to the track of rap music used in the film? If it's the former, we will have to tap in Erock for an official ruling for he is the judiciary on all of that.

if you want a good mix of music, go watch war(d) stories. that has one of the best soundtracks for a surf movie hands down
