Rincon is a serious place, no? I don’t know that I’d be up to par for that but Ive been spending some time lookin! My wife and kids have taken over and are forcing me to do a trip - Christmas presents are all gonna be in the form of Amex gift cards or travelers checks to be used on said trip ... looks like I’m gonna surf in warm water after all. I’m actually being alittle childish and nerved up about it. Been to several foreign countries and experienced some crazy stuff and here I am worrying about a surf trip Just so dammed type A it’s a constant struggle with stupid.
It’s got serious spots when the waves are big, but there are spots that are less serious you can go to as well. Lots of different setups. From beginner to advanced, it’s all there. Reefs, points, sand bottom, you name it. Exposed and protected spots. Various options depending on wind directions. I wouldn’t be intimidated by it. I could point you to the right spots depending on wind / swell directions and strength. It’s a great place no matter your skill. Just have to be informed is all.
Starting to sense the aroma of pakalolo right around da corner. Fresh sashimi and punani! Can’t wait to touch the reef and smell the air. One thing is for certain, I will once again be reminded of the power of the ocean. I’m sure I will have epic sessions and those that push me towards the channel with a humbling nudge! Looking forward to decompression...for real. Actually living the cliche, “no worries”. Next 3 weeks are nothing but focus- breathing, strengthening, eating proper, and riding my mountain bike. Prep time!!!! Then it’s on!
I’m always in the best shape when I go on a trip. It forces me back on the grind. Wish I always had a trip lined up, would keep me motivated at all times lol
Mr. B, i have a close family friend, surfer, who has a house in rincon. Once your all squared away let me know the dates and ill get in contact with him. If he's going to be down there I'll get you in touch with him. Nice guy. He'll show you around.
Welp, between beachbreak and BMon, DP and desandan, I think I’m being shown the way haha. Done. When is the best time to go in January or February? I’ll pick dates and then all your brains for trip info, etc. and book what I need to do. Thanks buoys
Peak season is November - February but it’s also fun in October and March / April. You can’t go wrong in any of those month’s IMO. All of my trips were in late October and April and all 4 trips had waves. Some more than others. There were small LB days, medium size waves like chest - head, big days in the 5-8 ft range, and then holy shit days in the 8-10-12+ ft range, and further North was 18-20+ ft range. Good news is, if it’s not working in Rincon, you can drive up to Jobo’s or somewhere more exposed to the North in the Isabella area. That’s more of the Atlantic, where Rincon is more the Caribbean. I never left Rincon to surf so I spent most of my time at Domes, Maria’s, Piston’s, Sandy Beach, Puntas, and I have drifted into Pools and Antonio’s. I remember a couple of days where it was barely rideable but could have driven North and gotten a wave if I really wanted to, I chose to spend more time with my wife those days and explored the area and around the island. If you’re there 3-5 days you will score.
Buddy of mine was telling me that there’s loads of waves in Portsmouth, Maine in January & February. Small friendly surfing community & no crowds in the lineup. Not expensive area to hang out or live in. What more could you ask for?
Iv actually been dieing to go up to maine/nova scotia. I want to do both. I feel like the cold isn't an issue. Colder then here. But iv been out in sub zero conditions plenty. Once your that cold that's it, your cold. What another couple degrees?
Ok, I’m looking at the week of January 6th - leave morning of and then come back the 11th later. Jet Blue flies direct from Logan - I can probably get a good deal on flights, I maintain a pilots boat and he’s a good dude. Now the question is lodging. Hotel, house? And how’s it for bringing borts? I wanna bring two if possible. I’m getting pumped already
Fly into Aguadilla, it makes the drive to Rincon quick and easy. It’s a small and efficient airport. I always fly Jetblue, I bring my shortboard, never brought a LB but you can, just easier with a SB. Car rental is right there, and off you go. I always stay with Bobby and Raquel at Mar Azul Surfshop. They have a couple private villas on property, they live right there and it’s gated. He’s from VB originally and she’s a local. Great people. He has rentals if you need one. All of the best spots are a very short drive down the hill. Get the 2nd floor villa if you can. It’s usually less than $100/night but not sure these days as it’s been a few years since I have been back. The room has a queen size bed and a small sectional couch that I believe has a fold out bed. There’s a small table and chairs for meals, a mini fridge, microwave, sink, and air conditioner. There is Satellite TV, and a decent bathroom. https://www.puertoricosurfinginfo.com/index.html https://www.puertoricosurfinginfo.com/accomodations.html
+10 DP. This will be an awesome stepping stone trip - I still want to do a CR trip and others but this is an amazing start and a world class break. My wife was just looking at the pic and the post from you, Desanadan and Yankee and she’s blown Away by how much help and advice Swellies are sending my way. I’m alittle choked up about it actually. Not really choked up but everything else is true hahaha
Dsup has pointed you in the right direction as far as lodging goes, Mar Azul is an easy stay. FWIW, i prefer to fly into san juan and make the 2 hour drive to rincon. Jetblue does fly into aguadilla, but it's "fedex hours" - you get in at 2 am or so, and your departing flight leaves at 3ish. As I've gotten older, that's gotten a lot harder to catch a red eye and then be up all night and then surf all day. I prefer to fly normal hours and then make the drive, have an afternoon session & get a good night's rest and hit it dp the next day. THat's just me tho, ymmv. As far as jetble baggage goes, they had a flat $50.00 bag fee for surfboards (at least that's what it was when i did barbados last winter).
Sometimes I bring my boards, depends on swell size and length of trip. If its pumping or I am there at least a week I bring my boards. United charges 150 each way now - which is such a BS price (there is a little trick to get this lower but it doesn't always work but you self check your bag as "sporting equipment" for $50, key is to self check before you get it weighed and just play dumb if they catch it) - but there are plenty of good shops with quality boards down there. Typical price is $20 per day and they operate 9am-5pm.
