I put all my boards in thick day bags then in the coffin with additional padding. Seems to work good.
I had a Dakine coffin with wheels, that thing was built like a tank. Got rid of it, I never haul more than 1 board and board bag makers have stepped up their game a bit in the last few years
Thanks guys! We were leaning towards Rincon and seeing as how Rincon won in a landslide from your input, we've decided on that and booked the trip. When we went last January, it was up and running, but some of the places outside of Rincon weren't doing so great and we wanted to surf some other areas on the outskirts. We didn't really do that kind of exploring last year, because of that. We just stayed local, besides going to and from the airport. As you know, I would have chosen Oahu, but between how long the flight is and the massive 6 hour time difference, it was just too much when I've only got 6 days or so to work with. That's almost 2 days of flying and time zone difference, so I needed to go somewhere closer for now. Wouldn't have even minded doing Costa, but flight times were a pain in the arse. Definitely doing Oahu in the summer or possibly spring and will do Barbados at a later time.
Also, the water is filthy in certain places. Lotta people got pretty sick, to the point where they couldn't come out of their room. Not saying it happens to everyone. The hotel had a lot of pills for guests who got sick - - tells you something right there. My surf trek kit includes Cipro, Immodium, Metronidazole.
FYI, not that it would make a difference in decision but may matter in future, Only 5 hour difference (hi does not observe daylight saving time) this time of year. Hopefully you score on your trip...
I wonder if it was the ocean water or tap water making people sick. I drank the Peruvian tap water on a couple of occasions (knew better, but i've just never been very careful about local water....paid dearly for that carelessness on a trip to Oaxaca, Mex once) and had a couple days with a bit of discomfort but nothing serious. When youre eating food prepared by others, its pretty hard to avoid tap water issues, even if you avoid directly drinking it. I felt like eating in some of those little holes-in-the-wall in Puerto Malabrigo was asking for trouble, but man that local ceviche was seriously good.
It was a pain, but not nearly as annoying as the boat drivers and their paying customers. I didnt like the boats being there, and didn't want anything to do with the boats, at the spot that had a lot of people in the lineup. Didn't feel right to me. Yeah we took a boat out to a more remote break at one point, but got skunked.
I got SOOOO sick at Malabrigo one time. Showed up for a swell and it was knee hi. Went to sleep pretty nervous. Woke up the next day and it was pumping...really really good. Literally surfed (and walked) for 12 hours that day. Ate some seafood that night with a group of friends and woke up at 5 in the morning coming out both ends. Surf was just as good that day....painful to watch it roll in for 2 kms right in front of my window. The only redeeming thing was that Snakes on a plane was on in English on my room tv>>>>>> oof
We wondered the same thing. It wasn't til the final couple days of a 6-day trip that we started dropping. We ate the ceviche all trip & no one seemed adversely affected by it. You're right, seriously good stuff. After putting info together via all of us talking as to what we ate (usually prepared from the hotel kitchen, with no issues from there) we concluded it was the water. Juanchaco was disgusting. The ocean was teeming with plastic, debris & felt greasy. We had to stop the van a couple of times on the way back to the hotel to let one of the guys heave his guts out on the side of the road. Chicama wasn't that clean, either, which seemed odd considering it is open ocean in the middle of nowhere. And the carcasses of the sea lions & seals laying on the beach, poisoned or shot by the Peruvian fishermen, made it grim. We will nvr really know but we figured it was the pollution in the ocean that nailed us. Glad I surfed those waves there - - wouldn't go back.
sonofabitch. just got a last minute invite to a snowboarding trip to Japan and my boss wont let me take off.
