As I see it, one has to accept surfers out with you early. There are less than at 10AM, that is for sure. Keep in mind, for me, it is greatly more shocking than for others. I first surfed that area in mid-sixties--we were the only ones there for a week at a time, even when breaking nicely and large. That was "another galaxy, another era"...long, long ago.
I'll never forget my solo sessions at Maria's, Domes, and Sandy Beach. (solo for an hour or two till people showed up)
It does suck that the crowds have become what they are, esp Rincon or anytime Surline "hypes" a swell. (My best trips have been the under-called swells bc it keeps the crowds lower, mostly for the Aguadilla breaks. Seeing this article below made me happy. They were talking about wiping out the Wildo area to build resorts a few years ago https://www.surfer.com/blogs/culture/punta-borinquen-world-surf-reserve/
True, at least its a-hole surfers rather than fat-belly all inclusive slobs. And the break will still exist.
By the way, I am informed that the quest to build the casino has simply moved down the coast to the Rincon area. I am told this by friends who own a hotel there. However, that seems to be meeting resistance from all, as well.
20+ years ago I was still "exploring" new spots and paddling out solo even on weekends... only to be joined by a few locals after church let out. It was an exciting time in my surfing life, and I have many fond memories of the way it used to be. Once the crowds started coming, my annual trips to PR came to an end. Then it was the USVI... then later the BVI... and now off to other islands. The size in PR can't be beat. But if you want uncrowded waves and a sense of exploration, there are hundreds of places in the Caribbean to check out. If you want to escape the crowds you have to start searching....................
Packed the coffin with magic boarts today. Cleaned off the cold water wax. Ready for tropical wax. New strings, check. Fresh leashes, check. Gear ready. There's something deeply satisfying, rewarding & peaceful all at the same time to be prepping for a surf trek to Pacific warmth & goodness, whilst outside a half a foot of snow falls, the biting cold wind swirls & the temps are in the 20's. Wheels up: 7 days
Thank you for that Yank! I just lived a little bit vicariously through you. I was looking forward to just that very thing: prepping gear before an adventure. And I WILL.

I used to surf at a spot in Dorado. Even stayed there for a week once. Hated San Juan... couldn't get out fast enough. Dorado always seemed like a strange place to me. In the daytime it was sort of a sleepy little town. At night on the weekend it turned into a full on street party... hundreds of motorcycles and hotrods cruising rally slowly, blasting music. People eating and drinking all night in the streets. Seemed wild... and always a little sketchy.
Ahhh....home sweet home!! Dorado has a nice place to surf, for sure....right in front of the golf course, which used to be a PGA course, many many years ago. In 2011, 1135 homicides--makes Chicago and American blacks look to be peewee league....
Yup, that has sound logic behind it. But CR is starting to have its crime problems as well, especially with the influx of Americans seeking drugs. Not as bad yet, though.
