Dang...Portugal well outlived the expectations. Scored some excellent surf completely alone and a few sessions with plenty of people out. The SW corner of the country really has tons of options for swell and wind. Definitely a winner.
SWEET! I surfed the areas between Porto and Lisbon. Would love to go back and do Lisbon and south. I would love to retire somewhere in Europe... Ireland, France, Spain, Portugal...
is that PR earthquake scaring anybody from their upcoming trip? i didn't even know they get 'em; never occurred to me that could i guess. Not sure if that's been something to deal with in the past
My uncle just passed away after two years of a terrible cancer fight. My aunt/his wife took his two daughters there this week for a vacation after that ordeal....and now they are dealing with the earthquake situation.
My trip is still 4-weeks out so I'm not real worried about my trip getting messed up by it. I'm sure whatever is going on underneath the earth's surface will settle into place by then.
Interesting change of events. Ended up going to Costa Rica instead of Mexico which turned out to be a really great trip. Flew into San Jose December 27th and let me add that I fly standby because I have a friend in the airlines who lets me fly with them for free. Took the bus from the San Jose Airport over to Jaco. Pretty short bus ride only 2 hours and if you've never been to Jaco it's not the greatest town in Costa Rica to visit but the waves were chest to head high both days I was there. Stayed in what was supposed to be in Airbnb but look like a dungeon with no AC and a semi functional bathroom. Since it was right on the beach I guess I really couldn't complain and in some ways it added to the adventure. After 2 fun days of surfing and exploring the prostitution and Drug riddle town we ubered up to Playa Hermosa. The Airbnb we had there was about 1 mile from the beach so walking was not an issue. The Airbnb was super! Young attractive lady and she baked cakes for a living and who doesn't like to wake up to the smell of cakes? Surf Playa Hermosa for a couple of days but you really had to wait for high tide and out in front of this little restaurant called backyard is a great beach break. If you walk to the other end of the town There's a soccer field can you turn down that street and there's another awesome break there where we met some really great people. We really enjoyed Playa Hermosa from there we made one day trip to quepos and that was a very interesting trip to discover hidden little surfable beaches but there was one long left there I wanted to get on but the locals said the water was polluted in that particular area so we didn't want to risk infection and stayed away. From there we made our way to dominical which is a cool hippie little surf town with tons of friendly people great restaurants wonderful places to stay and really awesome surf once again we had to wait for high tide and at times I had to wait for smaller waves to come through. January 6th we headed back to San Jose Airport by bus ended up sleeping on the airport floor waiting to catch a flight and headed home
Wow! I would totally appreciate that. It was a last-minute decision I was supposed to go to zipolite Mexico business trip and a little surfing turned out the boss got super generous. We ended up concluding business on the morning of the 27th
sounds great, Antoine. We did that same routing several years ago tho we didn't surf at Jaco, instead at Hermosa. We took it all the way down to Pavones, but that didn't fare well. Glad ya had a good time. After a wknd of stinky neoprene, i'm so ready to skin it again tho i've been enjoying the 70 degree weather in these here parts
Ant. I avoid jaco like the plague. To World, the hookers are good but not the street walkers. Most girls are nice if you say 'Quanto parro usted' . I like hermoso but its a young mans wave when big. The spot you surfed near the soccer field almost killed me 2 years ago when it was solid overhead. If you go again, hit up Vida Hermosa 2 doors up from Backyards. very good and super nice peeps. I find that the breaks down the dirt road are a bit more user friendly.
For sure... Vida Hermosa was delicious. I sat facing the ocean in the bar style seats and watched the sun set. It was heavy one day like you said. Any thoughts on playa Grande. Looks fun on a south swell. Pavones was excellent 2 trips back almost a year ago but the current was exhausting yet still worth the ride and the walk back afterwards. April we plan to head to panama but gonna need to rent a car.. might switch the trip to mexico just because the people are super friendly and its cheap.. Thoughts?
here's a pic from said dirt road spot...my friend and a very cool random dude who lives put of this van
My 2 cents--Not a fan of any place on Nicoya. The waves are good but the crowds are usually problematic no matter where you surf up that way. Another place to check out is Boca Barranca--super long left (2nd longest after Pavones). I surfed it last trip at around stomach high and omg were my legs toast.
