I like it! (Island hopping) It's a pretty good time of year for surf so I have a good feeling about it, fingers crossed.
BTW, let me know your dates. if there are waves and I am across the bridge, I will come catch a few with you (and even buy you guys a beer)!
id would be pretty crazy if u go on a surf trip to some exotic location, and there u meet only 1 fellow American.and that American turns out to be an si member
Headed to Puerto Rico in mid-February. Taking the wife and leaving the kids with the in-laws. Will be my first legit surf trip since I was in Baja Mexico 8 years ago, and my first time to PR. I am so freaking amped to be able to surf for the better part of a week and not have to worry about kids. I just hope I don't jinx myself...praying for surf!
Nice. Hope you enjoy the place. Get to the beach for 6:30AM. That is dawn time, light enough to get a few by yourself. Then expect others to join you at Marias/Rincon. I assume you are going to RIncon??
+1 I have scored Marias AND Domes solo for an hour or two before the crowd filters in. Paddle out in the dark if you have to, F IT!
Yessir. That's the plan - set our breakfast reservations for a little later in the morning (9:30ish) - go surf while she sleeps in, and then head back to eat and then surf some more/goof off/explore as necessary...
There's a bed and breakfast at the top of the mountain called The English Rose, excellent food, healthy options, and breathtaking view, you can see Tres Palmas (if I recall correctly) and everything from way up there. Highly recommended for a nice sit down breakfast. Call and make reservations, it's small and fills up fast. The drive up the mountain is sketchy, so be careful lol
I've left the fam in the dark many times in PR, and scored great, uncrowded surf in some out-of-the-way places... places that get torn up by the trades, once they kick in around mid morning. One of my fondest memories was catching a spot along the north coast early one Easter morning, before the sun came up. A local waiter told me about it, so I searched it out. I had never been to this spot before, and it was a LONG paddle out. When I first saw it, it looked fun... maybe chest high (???) and perfect lefts. But when I paddled out into the linup, it was well overhead and super freight training down the line over the reef. I surfed for a while and got lots of waves before the first locals came out to join me... mostly older guys, on bigger boards. I backed off and let them sit outside and get the big ones... I moved in and over and got the smaller ones. On my way home I stopped at a roadside shack and got breakfast (some locals were already drinking beer). I didn't know what was what, so I just asked, "que bueno?" She handed me this fried ball of something, which turned out to be a ball of mashed sweet plantains, stuffed with ground beef flavored with lime. Awesome... In later years, I'd return to that same spot I surfed, and for several years the same crew of guys... on the same boards... were always there. I could recognized their backs...
That mashed ball of mashed plantains also has yuca, and beef...it is called an "alcapurria"....unbelievably delicious. If I ate a bunch of those, I will be called gordo in no time--very fattening!!
Suggestion: after breakfast, walk down the hill to Tres Palmas--it is like walking through Jurassic Park. You may see a few large iguanas (pre-warn the Mrs> they harmless). The walk to and back is great exercise as well. Once on the beach, turn north and enjoy the desolate area of the beach. My wife loves that beach and enjoys bathing in the tide pools, however small they are.....
