What's your take on alaias? Worth the trouble to figure them out?

    I'm trying to get some feedback on what people think about alaias. It seems like the general concensus is that these things are tough to ride, paddle poorly and can be very frustraiting. Are they hard to find? Are they overpriced? Is the quality substandard? What kind of qualities would you like see improved in the current alaias on the market? Is the risk too high to invest in one? The reason I ask is I run Xylem Surfboards and I make/sell alaias and paipos and want to understand what others really feel about this type of surfcraft. Maybe you could advise others on your expirience too. Ask me questions if you have them!

    It's a small nitch of folks that ride them and even a smaller percentage that can ride them properly and smoothly in todays world. Pretty cool to see some of the vids out there on youtube of guys riding them. Machado, for instance.

    I was drInkin the alaia juice for a while myself after watching rob machado surf them so beautifully. And granted he was on beautiful waves too. I'm no rob machado and the waves arOund here are beautiful about 5 times a year... So now I've got a couple good looking alaias around the house and some blanks made up. No regrets because it was a fun project but I won't be spending any time building them and only slightly more time ridin them.

    I hope I'm the exception on this and you find a good clientel.

    Absolutely worth the trouble. There's a pretty steep learning curve, but they're great to ride. I have 3 alaia-like boards. One is a true alaia, one is a Wegener Bluegill and the other is an epoxy alaia shaped by South Bay Wegener (not the GSI one). I learned on the "true" alaia but the other two are way easier to ride.

    It's a different feel and certainly not for everyone, but I'd recommend them as an addition to any quiver.

    They're a lot of fun. Get the concave right and they're a blast. Getting one in trim on a clean wave is a great feeling - very hull like. Stepping up for a cheater five on a 5'2" finless board is a fun experience too.
