Hey ecoastprock I've been looking at getting into kiteboarding. I actually have been offered a kite by my girlfriend's cousin. Only problem is shipping it here from Holland. Plus, it's supposedly an older model. I've heard that the old ones are much more dangerous, especially to learn on, and that a lot of instructors won't even teach you if you don't have new equipment. What's your take? She (my girlfriend's cousin) made it sound like a piece of cake to learn but that's not what I hear from most other sources. Any advice would be appreciated! (feel free to PM me)

If the kite is older than '09 its not worth shipping it. Since '09 they have made huge advancements in the safety and reliability of all kitesurfing kites.

Also as the sport grows there have been a ton of new companies making kites, which has driven the price of equipment way down. You can find used gear less than a year old on craigslist that will get you through your lessons and first few months of crashing and trashing your kite.

After 2-3 months you should be done ditching your kite and be ready to buy your own. Sites like

    www.mackiteboarding.comand www.kitepaddlesurf.com

Have really good deals on last years gear

Just an example you can get all you need to kite for cheaper than a new Merrick stick

    http://kitepaddlesurf.com/2012-Envy-7m-Delta-Kite-699-Complete-HIGH-WIND-DEAL-2128104-7m.htm

Be careful it can be even more addicting than surfing. More days on the water, more powerful turns, no crowds and huge air.

Thanks a lot for the advice! I had a feeling that would be the answer but it's good to hear it from multiple sources. I'll start looking on craigslist now!

I normally stick to the small craft: Lightnings, JY-15s, Lasers & Sunfish. What about you?

The owner of Sandbridge Island Rest texted me a pic of 1st st from the bridge taken last week. Bigass A frame peak. As soon as I can find out how to transfer it from my phone, I'll post it.
