who else caught that CB cleanup yesterday?

Good on you BBG! I watched you on one computer while I watched the surf comp on another. Those dolphins are cool! I've surfed with a pod before.
I was paddling for a wave and saw a guy out of the corner of my eye, in a grey hooded suit paddling next to me in a better position. I pulled back and the "surfer" shot down the line under me. He never stood up because he had a tail... I won't be able to get in the water until after Christmas...

Surfing with dolphins is awesome, but scary when you first notice them. When I was on a trip in CA I was paddling out and about to duck dive a wave and as soon as I went to take a breath and go under, I see one bolting towards me than cruising the line. It's so cool being that close to them in their natural habitat and seeing how they enjoy the waves as much as we do.

 

Duck diving and seeing a porpoise coming at you in a wave always freaks me out a little. The impact would be awful. But, I think they have that whole sonar thing wired by now.

 

That's awesome BBG. Seeing the pilot whale one day then catching the clean up and sharing with the locals, pretty epic.

 

I made it early in the morning, but had to get out around 8 for work. Pulled up the cam around noon and I didn't believe what I was seeing/missing out on. Glad you scored, BBG!

Saw an unusually light grey fin when I was out there. What would your first thought be? Mine was Mary Lee. Just as the fin disappeared under the surface, about five more popped up. Quite the relief. That pod was headed north, so I wouldn't be surprised if you saw the same pod that I saw.

Off the wall thought: If you're next to a pod and you stick your head under the water, will you hear their "echolocation?"

 

dlouren, I think sometimes you can hear the click trains if the rest of the ocean is relatively quiet, lots of surf action would muffle/mask it.....it is like trying to watch a baseball game with screaming toddlers in the background

Rumor has it that whales will knock surfers out of the water with their tales.

 

Good stuff dude, had it happen to me once on a glassy chest high day, one of those days that has some lulls in between sets, but when you get one it's fun, my wife was out in the water with me and she pointed out that there was a dolphin headed toward me, i turned around saw it dip underneath me and the came back up to surface and that's when I paddled for the next wave, popped up and started down the line and then suddenly 3-4 others pop up and are all getting a ride, dropped in on me but were way faster and stayed ahead of me, pretty surreal experience honestly

 

I too had the same experience yesterday minus the whale. The wildlife and sea life around me as I surfed was incredible. I had dolphins 10 feet from me doing flips and absolutely destroying set waves, hundreds of pelicans divebombing schools of fish and one of the best sunsets ever. I got suited up and surfed right as the wind switched and the waves held up in that wind pretty good until sunset. That sunset was UNREAL!! Before going in I snapped a couple pics from in the water and on the beach.
