My favourite Smiths song, "That Surf isnt Fun Anymore" modified just for you CBSCREWBY Park the car at the side of the road You should know Winters cold will smother you And the waves will too When you laugh about people who surf Very cold and lonely Their only desire is to die Well, I'm afraid It doesn't make me smile I wish I could surf But the surf isn't fun anymore It's too close to home And cold to the bone It's too close to home And cold to the bone
Nice. When I first used to surf there, early 1960s, there was only one wooden home with tin roof--that was Marias house. None of the others, not one in either direction was there. None. All palm trees, and one wooden home. Then some idiot brought in a World Surfing Tour in 1968....and it shortly went into decline, homes were built, Maria passed away, and now, it is a sh1t show. I used to surf there for a week, never saw another soul other than my two friends. All by ourselves. Maria used to let us park on her property, served us arroz con pollo and gandules, for which Mr. Evans, my best friends father (he owned Evans Ford in Arecibo) gave her $50-- a lot of money back then. Those were my "good ol' days", best days of my life. But now....I am re-entering the second set of "best days" with the addition of our recently born grand-daughter. Life changes- we need to accept the changes and accept new reasons to accept pleasures of life. My goal is now to live long enough to see her graduate from schools etc....and still surf a bit here and there. But I will not return to PR; hate to see the decline of a once beautiful beach. I will leave it for others to enjoy. It still is a great place to go and surf, no matter what I say......
It really comes down to 4 things. 1. We live at the beach so my kids have had the luxury since they were toddlers of being on it every time there are waves. 2. Equipment. My kids have been lucky in that they have not just had equipment, they've had the right equipment. I make boards so that's covered but we've also bought all the winter gear for them from the time they were old enough to wear it. 3. Surf Mom!!! My wife doesn't surf but she's an awesome surf mom. She takes them surfing every day there are waves no matter how hot or cold it is on the beach she's taken them. Could be 40 degrees and she'll bundle up on her beach chair and read a book or wait in the car. 4. A good friend or two their own age who are just as stoked. This may be the most important thing of all. Surfing with dad or your older brother is sort of cool.......but its nowhere near as cool as surfing with your buddy. Also helps if the kid's buddy rips too. In my son's case he's got a friend who also rips and who also has a great pair of surf parents who will cart the kids to surf whenever. These kids have the life. They have a ton of fun and push each other in the surf and at the skate park.
Huh?? What the fvck are you, Irish Catholic with all those kids??? First thing you need to work on is keeping your zipper up and/or your pants on!!!
Oh, and btw, right now it is -3*F with 20-25 MPH winds. Should I go surfing this morning?? I do have a new 3/2 wetsuit I have been dying to try out! It is so fashionable, I am told, that it will keep me fashionably warm no matter what nature delivers!!!
-3? That's it? You don't need no stinking wetsuite! Banana hammock would be the call, you don't want to be overdressed for the occasion ya know...
ha I love the cold, I love winter just not psyched to be splashed with cold water during winter..don't mind the early spring I dunno maybe ill give it a shot and see what im missing, normally winter I do all the home projects I blew off all summer the nickname came from when I was younger and out in the single scene a person/friend made the comment as I strode into the club, man here comes the cool guy, he's so cool when he walks by you feel a cold breeze like he is jack frost...we laughed the name stuck
I'm at happy Hampton, between 2nd and 3rd streets, back off the beach a bit. We should prob meet for a post session beer one of these days, I might even know you, who knows. I only have 2 kids, I was referring to CJ's points for propre surf child rearing.
Surfed yesterday with a 14 yr old and a 75 yr old in the water. Pretty wild to see people with that kind of age gap have "The Stoke" in common. Surfed more in the last 2 months than I can count and looks like waves everyday for the coming week! It took awhile for my boys to get the surfin' bug but we go to the beach every weekend during the summer and and they hang out with friends so I think it just sorta evolved. Of course I tried to encourage without being too pushy. CJ's right, It does help if they have friends to surf with. Probably have to get a couple of real boards for them this summer. Hope all you old (and young) Fkrs have a wonderful whateva you celebrate season. Waves for all!
How old are your kids? My son is 5 and daughter is 3 and I'm ready to get him in the water knowing she'll likely follow but I want them to be excited about it. Last summer was good for him to play around on the boogey board. Realistically, I think he's got a couple more summers on the bb.
Got a couple hours in after cutting out of work a little early yesterday. Chunky drifty conditions, chest+ on the good ones, managed to battle through the constant onshore flow, lots of rips, duck dive city, but fun.
Got a few hours of sloppy waist to chest SE power choppe today. Was expecting to meet my buddy to surf but he had domestic compliance issues. Almost didn't go out because it looked awful and there was nobody else out. Plus there was all kinds of crap in the water floating up from Dade County. Tree trunks, shipping pallets, man-o-wars and seaweed. But if in doubt, paddle out. Glad I did cuz it was much better than it looked. Had the place to myself for an hour before a few other fellers I know paddled out. Got lots of fun rides and surfed reasonably well. Rinse and repeat tomorrow.
gonna be epic tomorrow afternoon in jers if the forecast doesn't change.8ft 19mph west wind .and it looks like Christmas weekend we're getting another swell, might just make up for thanksgiving
Managed a surf today. Nothing fantastic but I haven't surfed in 2 weeks so felt great. Waist-stomach, clean. Found the right spot.
