I was frothing and posted my last sesh, then went back in the tread to catch up on posts I hadn't read since I last posted. Felt kinda guilty of overexuberence after reading of my fellow surfers' challenges. It's all part of the game, but it sucks when you're on the sand, not the surf.
Surf was really good yesterday morning. Paddled out 20 minutes before low tide and a hair after sunrise and was greeted by some waist to chest high perfect glassy waves. The take offs were quick and the waves were sucking off the sandbar and pitching, many green mini barrels to be had. Scored those amazing waves for about 2.5 hours and the wind and tide came up. Headed off to work in a good mood, but I swear I would not have gone in at all if the wind stayed offshore.
Thursday is looking good, didn't look like this for Thursday's forecast when I looked yesterday. Cleaned the gutters, cut the grass for the first time this year, cleaned the house a little bit. Fuel pump and U-joints tomorrow. Hopefully surf on Thursday and I forgot about having to work on Friday when I was posting in here last night hahahaha.
Never a dull moment This story is true but the names are changed to protect the innocent. So it was ricocheting off the jetty and the shipping channel on the outgoing tide, 4 ft NE swell with a 20 mph straight east wind, making it stand up in random fashion as the sets would roll in and jack on the mid bar. Overhead bouncy peaks, fast sections, nice steep rights, a few shorter lefts, only six guys out, as it was getting late. Everyone was getting good rides. Then the shark fishermen set up and deployed their bait with a kayak outside the break, set up a few more rods just up the beach, and started fishing off the jetty, ignoring our gestures of displeasure. Oscar, a soulful surfer and beach service guy, got a sharp implement and cut the sharky fisherman's line. The pu$$y called the cops after he got heckled. Some big puffy frat dude said he was a Marine. He came into the surf zone, and D Train met him,and smack was talked, then the cop showed up as everyone was taking a wave in to meet and greet. The cop was a PBSO, not a local geramonde, poor black dude had no idea how things can get so heated over such petty BS. But the sherrifs here shoot first, and he was surrounded by angry white men in shorts looking to lynch another angry white man in shorts. And their girlfriends were conspicuously videoing with their phones up close, which probably kept things tamped down. At one point the cop said to the shark hunter, "you called me here, let me do my job". Then the redneck got all puffy at Oscar and Oscar took off his wet suite and they both had a flex off in front of the cop, I said to Oscar, there is a cop right here, don't go to jail. Things got a bit more chill. Then I said to the cop and the shark Fu(ker that we have surfed here over 50 years, and it is disrespectful to chum the waters as we are surfing, and we are entitled to this spot by law, and we took care of the jet skiers over the years, and we will cut his lines every day all day and get rid of them too. Then I pointed at them, made a funny hand gesture and walked away. One guy told them we'll have 25 of us surfing here tomorrow. Then as I went back up the beach I told each one of the shark fishermen the same thing, they were all quiet, one said he was a local and wasn't going to start fishing until it got dark. Pu$$ys. I had to leave due to family obligations, the rest of the crew paddled back out and enjoyed the waves. The shark humper skulked around, but did not fish - I checked the cam when i got home a bit later, they all packed it up. To be continued...
I'd have had a bit more respect for the would be angler if he did it the ol fashion way 1:36 [h=3][/h]
Where I live, there's almost as many guys fishing the jetty as there are surfers on some days. In all the years I've lived and surfed in Manasquan (well over 20 years of surfing here and a combined 9-ish years of living here) I've never encountered a spat between the fishermen and surfers. I'm sure it's happened before though, at some point in time. The guys fishing the jetty are kind of like us, they just like their fishing and we like our surfing. I'm sure there's a few guys who do both, especially with the number of flat days there are.
Surfrider Foundation here in PB County brokered a deal between the fishermen and the surfers once the old Juno Pierwas destryed by storms. We and Lotts Bros Bait & Tackle, and lots of private donors helped to design and build the new pier. There are signs onthe pier about 100 or so yardsout sayingits time to paddle wide, avoiding skirmishes. Most abide, and they stopped hurling treble hooks at us,and we stopped throwing their stuff in the water. People fish off the jetty at Pumphouse all the time and no one cares. Same at Jupiter Inlet. They target snook, snapper, and such. It's the guys with the kayaks and heavy tackle, targeting sharks, while we are surfing, that is disprespectful and wont be tolerated. Most of us fish too, but we have more common sense.
I'm having a hard time interpreting today's surf cam and report. The AC Unit I figured out (water is cold), but what do you think the screen signifies?
fisherman around here gave me about 6 big ol surf perch last year on my birthday the moment i got out of the water because we were surfing directly infront of them while they were fishing and they said we scared off the sealions that steal there fish
Dude I almost got chased by a big azz bull sea lion at the harbor a couple of weeks ago. Surf was breaking around the knuckle and the bull was cruising off the tip of the groin whilst his gigantic head was jutting above water and he was headed straight for me. When he got about 10-15 yards from me, one of the locals caught a set and came flying towards us in the channel. The bull must've got lurked hard because he looked at the local, then looked back at me and let out a couple of hella barks before he went under and disappeared. Have to admit I got a little nervous lol
sea lions are easily 2-4 times your mass, bulls up to 10x and have dentition like a dog or bear, I'd be freaked too on a side note I surfed a north facing beach that I never surfed before, a lil slabby shoulder hi peak that turned into an inside runner, only 50 yards from shore with just my buddy. sweet lefts for two hours with no one around. bright blue water, coral heads making swirls and a double up take off that just pushed you into the slot, dreamy lil set up. a lil spoky being on that side, has a vibe, but the neon blue water and transcendent sunset along with dabs made it a wonderful session, just cherry. the fact I can find surf in America in my trunks with no one out in 2017 is like some sort of paradox
Your description reminded me of La Perouse. Different rock, but kind of a similar ice blue lurky spot. You're in trunks, and I'm perpetually locked in rubber. I guess Heaven means different things to different people.
Today has been nothing short of spectacular. Surfed 3 sessions so far and fueling up for another before dark as I type this. A couple shots I took off of my bedroom deck. I didn't shoot much today because I was in the water.
