Been surfing around south-central Florida for the past few days. Caught some really fun mornings where it glassed off overnight and stayed clean until mid-late morning. Nothing big but consistent stomach to shoulder. Feet are tore up from all if the rocks on the bottom....the place I've been surfing mostly is full of busted up reef. Water seems like its between 70-74 somewhere. I've been skinning it but some are wearing tops or 3/2s
YEEEEEEEEW! Yesterday looked pretty crazy. All reports were saying 8 or 9 feet. I didn't go. Winds weren't right until maybe the last hour of light. I was busy with wedding stuff anyway. But this morning was a freaking BLAST! Woke up. -2 degrees with the wind chill. Winds offshore and gusting in the 20-30mph range. Buoy was 6 somthing at 11 seconds. Damn cold and windy. Checked the first spot and it was PERFECT. Wind was knocking it down a tad but it made for a nice long peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeling wave. Lefts and rights. To all the FL guys who were saying "just use cold water wax".... Yea come up here and try that. Tried waxing up this morning and it was like rubbing a rock on the board. I was able to manage but my stick was quite slick today. It was just me and a few other guys i surf with frequently out. Real fun vibe. The cold really brought out the comradery in everyone. My sesh started a bit slow. The wind was blowing us way outside. It was a constant paddle in to stay in position. Then as we all spread out to diffrent peaks i found the honey pot. Wave after wave after wave. A pain paddling into them with the wind but the rides were long and went forever. I caught a bunch of both rights and lefts. Couldnt get too aggressive but that's ok. These waves were all about drawn out carving maneuvers. I love a wave like that. Stayed out for close to two hours. Ice formed on my eyebrows and beard. Face went completely numb and painful at the same time. Ice formed all over our suits. I reached my limit but the waves were too good that i kept saying one more. Things eventually died out. Now the buoy is only 5 somthing at 5 seconds. Glad i got on it early. As me and my buddy were running back to our cars there was this photog who snapped a few pictures. Then asks if it was cold. I'm curious to see this picture, I'm pretty sure we were both crying frozen tears. Sat in the truck with the heat blasting for a solid 30 min and was still shivering. So stoked on the sesh. Not to happy with this brutal cold coming back after that 2 or 3 day 40 degree heat wave. But man, with how the waves were this morning... totally worth it and couldn't be happier
Amazing how surfing in 30 degrees now feels pleasant after surfing in 14 degree - ice on the head - temps last week. I surfed for 3 hours yesterday, didn't even get a chill. Good stuff.
I don't know where you were, Sig... but I had the visor fang icicles this morning. Chords and zippers frozen. Sand solid as a rock. But man... it was firing.
One of the coldest sessions I’ve ever had this morning all things considered. Was about an hour south of my usual spots. Offshore wind but most waves kinda closing out. Plenty of wipeouts with a few fun rides mixed in. So cold though. Only lasted about an hour and a half. I think I’ve probably surfed colder air/water combo once or twice but always close enough to home to drive in my suite so it’s straight from heated car to lineup and back. Changing in and even moreso out of the suite was horrendous. And fingers/feet completely numb the entire session. First time I’ve ever wished I had a 6 mil.
This morning was still fun, waves still in the chest high range. N / NW wind made it slightly bumpy and at times semi clean, it was chunky and drifty but really fun when it all lined up. Last 3 days have been great. It was 45 degrees this morning, and I was the only one out after one guy disappeared after a few minutes.
That's hard core mon! It was cold (actually still cold as shat) this morning. Wax at <40 is an issue. Florida boys getting some waist high plus warm waves while your charging some frigid conditions. I somewhere in between lol. My boy in North FL said it was actually chilly this AM. Mitchell picked a good time to Go south. I looked at the cape (Canaveral) and the N FL buoy the last 3 days. Looks like what you said waist to chest and warm!!!! I almost went down for the long weekend...wish I did!
No man. You weren't the only one who said it. I'm not attacking you. Don't get so upset all the time. Not everything has to be an argument. It was a recent discussion and today reminded me of it. Breathe and relax man.
Yeah it was cold. The wind is what really made it brutal. Not the first time and won't be the last. Iv accepted that it's just part of living where i do. But i was caught off guard. It was cold like this for like 2 weeks, then warmed back up for a few days. I didn't realize it was going to be frigid again. Had to mentally prepare for that real fast.
Dude you gotta try the Zoggs cold wax if you havnt already- I used it the other day when it was freezing and it went on nice- it was still fairly soft and easy to apply...it wasn't a rock. plus I keep it in my truck so the wax was cold too... Just bringing it up since I was thinking about the recent thread too while applying...
I'm in the pit of misery LB. I missed the swell this weekend because I had to go to upstate PA to install insulation on the pipes in our cabin and flush the pipes with anti-freeze. Air temp was -2 with 15 mph winds. Got back last night so I bailed on going out today. I have my follow up to my surgery at U of Penn tomorrow. My drought continues
I could have gone today but....naw....not in 10*F with winds lateral to the beach. Surfing sucks when you spend more time suffering than surfing.
Ill agree with this. In fact i thought yesterday was going to be this exact scenario where i suffer more than surf. Was suffering but after every wave the suffering seemed to disappear. Until it slowly crept back. Good waves will do that to you i suppose
