2019 started out nicely on Delmarva as well...air temps over 60, punchy little south swell, offshores all day. Chest high peaks pretty much all day.
Nice shots! Some fun ones today! I got out in the afternoon... thought it would be waist hi by that time with the heavy west wind... was surprised to find it chest to head with a slightly OH set every once in a long while... fun waves but the sand at a majority of spots is not set up for the south swell... still fun! Took my share of beatings today as well- just was not at the right place at the right time, taking off late and getting hung up with the wind- that kind of thing... but was refreshing still... As far as the rash gaurd conversation- I personally have found that it never really helped. A reg summer rash gaurd just made me colder. Never helped. There was a ‘new’ material about 10/15 yrs ago to the surfing community- poly pro. Kinda fleecy like. I had a few of those and even had one by Under Armour - they kinda worked but the lack of movement / restriction and trying to get a wet wetsuite on over top of one never really made it worth it. I haven’t tried the wool material... since I feel that it’s better just to go nude underneath lol it’s kinda like camping out on a cold night- it’s actually warmer in a good sleeping bag with less clothing on. AnywYs- maybe the real question is why are you already trying to stay warm? It’s not even that cold yet... what are you gonna do when it’s like 37 degree water temp and 30 degree air?? still in a 4/3 and it’s just right ... although that’s here in Belmar (the best surf break on the continental US of A) the water is always slightly warmer (one BELMAR)... thankful for those Labradors...
The rash gaurd topic would be an interesting new thread to hear about what everyone has found with ways to keep warm.
My youngest started the year by paddling out in boardshorts during the Polar Bear Plunge and waiting a good 10 minutes for a set wave and tore it up to the beach. Air mid 50s and water low to mid 40s.
Awesome start to the year yesterday with a barrel fest in NJ on the tide push. The last few swells have been super fun here. Hope this continues.

Buoy was 42deg. yesterday. Wind was pretty warm early on but then got cold blowing down from the north. Suit was comfortable whole sesh but if it were 30’s and windy it would have been a shorter sesh for sure.
was out there as well, had some FUN, fast rights and one great left. Wind had a little north to it at one point but the offshore really stood them up nicely. Wave of the day had to be a head high sneaker that I somehow stuck the drop and just got shot out of a cannon. Happy 2019!
I mean this in the least creepy/disrespectful kind of way. But everytime you post a picture of yourself i laugh. Same pose, diffrent board. You totally look like the type of whack-O id enjoy sharing waves with. Got out for a few seshs recently. Been to busy to post. But no one worry. Bassmons getting his
Yesterday was the strongest offshore winds I ever surfed in. Surf was pumping in the OH range, but you had to almost continuously paddle in to maintain position, and prevent being blown out to sea. Then there were stretches that were unsurfable when gusts were hitting around 50+. It was crazy, but that said, there were some very sweet barrelly nugs that made the session more than worth it. Tip o the day, when paddling into a into a gnar wind, keep the nose of your board just under the water to minimize face spray. You learn something every session.
Last Wednesday it was chunky wind choppe out of the southeast and my local was breaking good. Chest to shoulder high with bigger peaks. Thursday it got way bigger and blown out, but Friday the wind relaxed a bit and it turned into a south windswell and there were 8 foot slabs hitting the jetty and breaking right, bowling gnarly takeoffs, then jacking up and lining up for a 100 yards or more. It was gnarly. Hard to get out too. It's gone flat now, just in time to make some $$$. Cheers and Happy 2019 ya'll crazy cold weather chargers.
i rang in the new year sick. that was expected as 2018 treated me like sht, couldn't be happier it's 2019. went surfing new years day and yesterday - took that off. sick on vicks is where it's at. took out a 7'6" Allison on New years at the washout, thi to waist cleanliness. forgetful sess, but it wasn't bad either. yesterday took the LB out and came upon knee to thi hi semi chop. all manageable, temps were hovering around 70 so gettin in n out of wetsuite wasn't a hassle. we're about to go flatline around here, time to seriously consider surf trips for this year
Got some 4-5' yesterday, happy birthday to me! our spot is in part of the national park system so the locked gates and long walk in really kept the crowd down
Saturday afternoon session in Maryland. Day started out very funky/small. Midday low tide lull seemed like it would never end. Waited out the tide change with a few friends, standing around doing the classic thing....."it looks awful but might get better" "it might get better but i'm sure as hell not sitting around for an hour while its knee high" "we're getting skunked I'm outta here" 5 of us just paddled out in shit conditions an hour after low tide, full of confidence if would improve with the change in tide and sure enough by mid afternoon it perked up quite a bit. Surfed 2-4 p.m. then shot these when i got out. Nothing but stoke in the water....that great feeling of trusting your spot knowledge, and getting a little payoff.
Went down to RI. Started off small, clean and pretty warm but eventually the sky clouded up, the wind/choppe picked up and I'd had my fill. Fun day for a few hours of logging.
Went out as the tide was finally starting to drop and the wind was still favorable this mid morning. Small swell only breaking properly at the south side of the Juno Pier. Knee to waist high and bouncy, but an occasional peeler. Took the old log out and scored a few long long long backsidde lefts got into the groooooove and the hips slowly mooooved.
