Well, we have to keep in mind, the area where Tamboo, Pools, etc are located, that area is known by the PR locals as "gringoville". An area full of phony ex-pats that are trying to scratch out a living so they can surf. Not whom I want serving me for dinner, when I am accompanied by Mrs Cuda. When I am alone, I go to a colmado and buy a meal there and eat on the beach, or, on the balcony of my hotel, don't care.
Nope, not me. Surfing has always been a far secondary activity. Nice, but not the end all. Fun, sure. But, at least up here in the North, it is accompanied with a lot of hassles to do.
Some of the best and most memorable meals I've ever had in PR have been from side-of-the-road shacks, with nobody but locals hanging out. Puerto Rican street food... cheap, and the beers are cold!
There was a truck that would post up near Mar Azul and Lazy Parrot that had incredible empanadillas, but didn't see them last trip down. Then there is the one at Steps Beach that is really really good too.
I enjoy being an annoyance....lol But, for years I raced sailboats, a substitute for surfing, one which I enjoyed just as much as surfing. But I tired of owning a sailboat and all the gear and repairs , etc. Then there is off trail cycling..... So you see, I like many activities. Surfing is but one, granted, the one I have been doing the longest, unless...unless....one can include my tricycle as a 3 year old.
I owned a Catalina 22 which I raced (with no crew) in class races or Portsmouth Class.. But I more often raced Lightnings, with friends. Did so for 15 years. But "Curmudgeon"...would have been a great name. Mine was "Natural Selection".
Man I remember seeing pix and movies with that place called Gas Chambers and thinking how much I'd love to surf that joint. Never see anything on it anymore. does it even break anymore?
Yeah. remember when Sunset and Waimea were regular features, and now you never see them? surfing has changed, and so have the easels I guess. my wife just asked me about Scorpion Bay about 10 minutes ago while surfing the internet. I told her that back in the day, the spot was almost mythical. Today, not so much. her next question was, "so does that mean it's not crowded now?". i almost choked on my hamburger lol
totally agree, and I'm at the point that all I really want to see is dudes ripping doh+ and bigger. Who gives a sh!t about some moron banging out one (albeit insane) turn or boosting some huge air. THen again, that's been around for a while now
settle down there Pantsless, it was a homemade gourmet bacon cheeseburger lol lol I'm with you dawg, I appreciate today's air game but aesthetically, to me it's becoming boring. I've been getting off lately watching guys at huge Cloudbreak and now guys are actually paddling into huge bombs at Peahi and Mavs, good stuff mate. Just never been a contest guy but that's just my flavor, I don't bash anybody who follows the circuit. Growing up surfing around Sunset Cliffs and La Jolla reefs with a "no goon cord" attitude has been too hard to shake lol
today is the last day before my first vaca of the year. Tomorrow should be some swell at my local spot, leftovers from a strong gust shot today. It's dropping temps again, but i'm going in regardless. Unfortunately, St Augustine isn't going to do me much favors which was somewhat half expected. More drinking i guess. i'll bring my LB and maybe a longer fun board in case something churns up
