Damn So tempted to saddle up the rig, make the trek to TPTSNBN for 0500 DP. But that dang offshore wind fucast w 25-30 knot gusts tempers my enthusiasm for the 3 hr drive each way.....what to do.....I need to move to the beach Arghhhhhh
wind guru for Assateague is saying w-wnw 15-18 with gusts to 25-28. the wind direction is fine, but considering the swell is short period, that's borderline could get blown down fast.
yeah it was. We were splitting so many peaks tonight. Im goofy so i'm always on the left, and my bros are reg foot so looking to go right. There were a bunch of waves that came through where we did the last minute paddle around so we could both take off frontside
Oh man, Assateague. I grew up going there. Old man said OC was for mo’s so it’s the place we went to that we called the beach. That was the first place I began “surfing” in the very early 80s. A kid getting smashed in the shore pound with no guidance except the old man, who happened to be surf fishing right near me, yelling for me to try again and not be a pu$$. Man, next time we go up to visit momma-pan, I have to take the fam there for sure
I've been out quite a few times in the last couple weeks. Probably averaging 3-4 days per week. Nothing amazing, but pretty good for what you'll get in June. Water is still real cold here, probably not even 65 yet. Lack of forecast available is causing me to not wanna venture too far outta town/beyond Monmouth or south of Seaside Park lately! And I just went for the trifecta on mentioning the forecast pages being down haha.
Sitting in the truck waiting for downpour to end as I type ... down in BassMons stomping grounds with my daughter - hoping to share some waves with him and her - on her new bort! She spent the night waxing and finning it and she’s super stoked. Bass made himself a besty for life with this gesture and made the whole trip a success even if we get skunked.
Get there early if it's a summer wknd, Pan. It's not the quiet remote spot anymore. It's swamped with Pennsyltuckians & NY/NJ creatures who have 'discovered' it & who won't be leaving.
happy summer solstice everyone! woulda been a great day to have off at least down here. there were some mushy n textured waist hi's by the pier. not a real crowd, still driftin north. had two rounds of it on the LB. going right on all dem hoes.wind should die down n produce on its way up to a hi tide. maybe catch some after work - past the 5:30 lo. hope ya'll get some if not many of what one guy said last night "the shortest night of the year"
FUUUUUUUN sesh this AM. Met up with Mr. B and his daughter. Took the day off of work. First look wasn't great. Winds didn't fully come around yet, right off low tide, and swell didn't seem to be filtering in just yet. Waited it out for a bit and checked again about an hour later. Swell was starting to fill in and with a little more water on it, it was improving. Chest high with some bigger sets. Winds went offshore and were fairly light. First wave was a sick one. A right. Dropped in, one big pump, then a big gouging down carve. It was one of those turns were you just feel that "arghhh" flowing from the water, through your board into your feet, and up your entire body. Got a few like that. While out you could feel the power increasing. Some got super steep and critical. Made a few crazy drops into closeouts. Don't know if the left's weren't working or if i just am slacking on my backhand. Got out, rain came back in, winds picked up. Grabbed some breakfast with Mr. B and his daughter and this cool old school diner that peajay actually suggested to me when i first moved to this town. Time to do some dishes, power nap, and hope for similar conditions for the dusk sesh!
Wind stayed cooperative (west at 10-15) until around 9 a.m when it began to blow harder and more NW. Swell built overnight and was 3-4 foot SE lines.
You hesitated. Second guessed. Missed out. Not epic but looked fun. We have all done it. 180 degree angle flowed right by me...
Second sesh was surprisingly really really fun! Winds were still pretty heavy and i was sold that my 5'8 was not enough and i would end up just bobbing. Took a few waves to figure it out. You had about a foot of leeway. To deep and you weren't getting in. To inside and you get slammed in thigh high water. Once i figured it out i caught a few really fun ones. Two where i was able to link up two turn waves and a few others that were just down the line racers. Had a blast. You'd get hammered on the inside. But luckily it is shallow so you could hold your ground. Mr. B would take off on a wave, I'd be waiting out the back for a wave, and i would just hear cackling laughter from him as he's taking wave after wave on the head. Freaking lunatic. Had a blast, surfed with two other locals who were sharing good vibes, caught some fun ones, finished the day off with a nice dinner. Now to bed i go, absolutely shot, hoping for a fun leftover day tomorrow. What a great first day of summer
Another fun session this AM. Similar to last night, but smaller with sets only in the waist high range. Quick punchy runners though. Brought the LB, mini sims, and 5'8. Went with the 5'8 since the waves still looked like the had umph. I checked all the boxes. Got a few down the line screamers, a few cruisers, a backhand mini barrel that dropped out and slammed me in knee deep water, and a right that i was able to get a solid whack in on the lip.... wind made for extra spray, making me feel like the man of course. Kook city though. Bunch of dudes on LBs who couldn't buy a wave, instead of sitting inside they just kept sitting outside and missing waves. When they did finally catch one they either ALL caught the same wave or caught a close out.... or both. Was all good. Was a little tricky picking off the good ones so the kooks flailing insured i got them when they came. Im shot, running on 4 hours sleep and stoke. Mr. B is on his way down now, going to grab a quick second sesh with him on the LB then call it for the day. Still some fun looking dribblers out there
Yesterday was the tits around here. Took off from the day job and was in the water at my spot at 8. Perfect stomach to chest high with a few bigger ones just peeling down the sand bar. Howling w/nw winds really picked up after 9 but it was good until the tide came up bigly and made it ghey around 10:30. Water was cold so I donned my full surfing suite. After eating a Hershey bar with almonds, I went against my normal convictions and went to OC in the summer. OC NJ for all youse not in the know sends the surfers to the back of the bus in the summer, like most towns at this time of year. Dozens of surfers confined to little slabs of ocean, crammed up against a jetty and against each other. So I went to the least crammed of these surfing beaches North of 7th and south of waverly. The crowd wasn't bad and there will still waves to be had, albeit for only about an hour and I actually ran into some familiar faces. A very good start of the official first day of summer surfing season
