Surfed Domes briefly before driving up and surfing Jobos for a couple of hours. All in all kind of a frustrating day. Weak surf at domes.....drive from hell......difficult crowd and conditions at Jobos.
Winds have been rough for the north coast this week. Jobos locals will run the rock, best to take the next peak over although the trades make the drift tough. Wildo is probably the spot to check this week - little shelter and crowd shouldn't be too bad
Fun looking swell lined up early next week if you are still there, hasnt been the best Feb for the island but at least there is non stop waves
It hasn't been flat on this trip but not exactly what we were hoping for. Managed to drive around and find something worth surfing each day. Jobos yesterday afternoon. My son also came to the aid of a swimmer who was getting sucked out to sea and got him back to safety. This guy was lucky there were surfers there and that this all went down during a lull. I watched this all go down from a couple hundred yards away through the big lens. The young man was getting sucked out but still had his feet on the bottom. His friend in the white shirt who was a decent swimmer came to help him and must have told him to try to swim to the rocks. The young man who was not a good swimmer was immediately sucked out as soon as his feet were off the bottom when he tried to swim for it. His friend made it to the rocks but he went strait out to sea.
Pools Beach this afternoon. I entrusted my camera to my 14 year old briefly and among the 600 pictures he took mostly of nothing he did manage to get a couple of pictures of yours truly.
I see this all the time there. Good save, hopefully the locals let em get a set wave off the rock BTW the swell should be pretty good last day or so which from the pics it looks super fun.
side question i guess - was planning on PR being the trip next year in February. It'd be the winter trip. January or February in your opinion? flex on december or march i guess, but when's usually the month to hit that up among those winter months?
Either or... but in my experience I've really only traveled there in December or January, and January has been better with those big blasting cold fronts barreling out of the NW.
If you want size/quality January-February are typically the best outside of hurricane season. I try to go every year these months. This year has not been typical, mostly trade swell, but it is also been way more consistent. This year has been non stop fun size waves. The trades have also been tricky esp on the north coast but that is typical. It also depends where you plan to stay. November - probably one of the slower months but never been skunked late Dec to early March is prime imo April has been hit or miss for me I dont usually go during hurricane season but it can get epic and the summer is slow. I can give you better details in PM if you pull the trigger, I know a lot of spots to go depending on the swell
Monday and Tuesday were both classic Puerto Rico. I didn't shoot much on Monday as I surfed 3 sessions, two of which had me swearing I'd never go back to Puerto Rico. Monday morning everyplace had a wave and every wave had five people paddling for it. In the morning there were sets up to about 4 feet overhead. Worst crowd I've ever seen. Total shitshow. We scored at Pools late in the day with only two other people out there. As for me I had more fun in that one session than the whole rest of the trip combined. Tuesday was shoulder to a couple of feet overhead. This was my first time to Puerto Rico in many years and I could take it or leave it. The crowds sucked which is a total turnoff for me. I'm much happier chasing empty sand bars on the Outer Banks. Some shots from Tuesday.
sorry to hear that CJ. Ppl in the water is always a factor to consider, and just a recent example but my buddy got chirped at (no good reason) early in a sess and his whole sess was immediately terrible and he griped about the guy giving the chirping and pretty much didn't want to go to that break for the rest of the day. Crowds, people yeah they're all factors and that sux for ya but i think we've all been there at some point. Your bouyz rip, thanks for the pics as always
I've surfed really packed days at places like Lowers and not had the crowd piss me off like that. Warm water is nice but I'd rather have an empty lineup than warm water.
Here are a couple shots one of the local photographers got of my son during sessions I was surfing with him instead of shooting pics. https://www.rinconsurfphotography.com/SurfingPuertoRico/Monday-Feb-17-2020-Marias/i-MrxsVDH/A https://www.rinconsurfphotography.com/SurfingPuertoRico/Tuesday-Feb-18-2020-Domes/i-7CnhzKc/A
