yes ocmd serving it up again today I thought mitchell was being overly optimistic, but not so - called it on some other thread Still 5.2 @ 13
=CONFIG]16994[/ATTACH] I had to deal with this crap during lunch today. Head high sets. Hard offshore. One other guy out. I said no photos but i'll make an exception just this once thanks to my post surf beer and flash new come.
Lemon aid Shoulder to head high paddle a thon. Really got to practice my paddling, duck diving, and shark evasion skills today. Paddled out on Singer Island with one other dumb a$$. We got some nice chunks. The tide was dropping, the wind was east about 20 mph, and the swell was out of the north. Every now and then one would dredge and suck up and peak and go boom. I took out the wrong board (the fish) and slid out on the best two drops. The water was clear, sun over head, no bait. A big boy came in, kept eye balling us. An 8 foot lemon shark. He was not looking for bait. Luckily no lulls, the last wave in was on my belly. Life is good!
waves this week have been head high, but the sideshore winds sucked (SI said 10 mph, but it felt more like gusts of 20 mph). Tried to surf it, but it was just too sh!tty for me. Drifted the entire stretch of beach three times today.
I know it's not the EC, especially Belmar. But pretty nice for the Gulf coast, water temp 73, air 70, slight off shore and all to myself
Couple times a year it all lines up perfectly; it can be really good, but very rare and fickle. I can help you out if you're ever in West FL (where I grew up), few spots that are better than most.
Love me some Sand Key Drainers, only seen it once since I moved here but man was it fun, easy paddle out too compared to the east coast. Scored some super fun Ponce (North Side) inlet today. 4-7 foot rights all the way down the inlet wall. Tons of waves to be had and plenty of rippers out there. Even saw some guys on the inside of the inlet riding the "novelty" wave with ski assistance. One fock decided to do a tow in on a measley 6 footer right in the middle of the line up between where we were all sitting and I almost had a collision with that jacka$$ after he got slingshotted into the liner. Whats the point at that size? fun? who surfs for fun anymore anyway?
Sand Key is fun, been a minute since I been there, Dunedin / Clearwater is my old stomping grounds. These days if I surf the Gulf I head further South, usually better the further you go, islands and jetties are the key. Hint hint. Ponce is so fun, but gets so damn crowded, especially when it's big. Tow-ins though? Really? Never seen it there before but not surprised. Lots of retards to go around.
I lived in Naples for 9 yrs, that place is flat. I've been on more waves here this year then my whole time down there. However there were a few spots heading south past Everglades Chity, but like DP said, everything has to be in line. SW Fl has Snook fishing though
I lived on the FL panhandle for 5 years. It's more consistent than the west coast of FL, but it's still relatively flat most of the time. Panhandle summers are basically pancake flat all three months...and locals have to sit there watching/hoping through stifling 100+ deg temps and 99% humidity. Summers get about one junky knee-waist windswell per month...and you really have to be on top of the weather because those swells can jump up out of nowhere and die within an hour or two. Alabama point is a jetty that blocks the predominant SE winds, but there's a lot of hype associated with that spot considering it's usually not even big enough to surf (unless you're a little grom or a dwarf). On a good summer season, the usual windchop can be augmented with a couple of tropical swells...however, most of summer is barely even longboardable, so a SUP is the perfect craft for the gulf. Immediately after fall, winter and spring cold fronts, the panhandle can get absolutely perfect, head high A-frame barrels (one day swells)...but water gets down to mid 50s and nearly freezing air temps...might as well be on the east coast.
Wow, almost word for word how I pictured it...actually considered P-cola or Navarro for retirement at one point, even thought of taking up SUP lol. All things considered, I'm happy with my final choice. Water's cold but surf is consistent and wifey is close to her kin again, which means The Kid gets happy nookie on the reg. Maybe I'll trip down there soon to see what I passed up. So waterbaby---where in CA are you (if you don't mind me asking). I still get the occasional jones for home in SD.
Stationed in P-cola in 80-81. Been back several times since. Loved it and the whole "Redneck Riviera" Gulf coast. Windsurfed, sailed Sunfish, fished, drank beer, and chased visiting college girls. But didn't surf until 3 years ago.
