I guess it would be slater. He is close to my age and was quick to become known when I was a grom. When I first started surfing, I loved to do backside floaters across a section. I used to try to copy his style. I even had a picture of a him doing a killer floater on a Kechele (I had a Kechele). I grew out of it I guess.

I definitely admired the styles of Curren, Occy (mainly his backhand style), and the rawness of Fletcher boyz.

All the classics are cool with their own place in surfing history (MR, buttons, and Duke)

Finally, I have much respect for the guys who charge absolute mental. The Big Wave phenomenon (beyond classic pipe, Puerto and sunset to MAVS- JAWS- Chopes. To me, since I never really charged over 8' those guys are ones to admire!

My buddy Joe would always come to school (freshman year) after he surfed and would be so stoked and generally happy - I didnt get it then... He moved to Hawaii to live with an uncle for a few years (jr/Sr year of HS), but came back after graduation.

Once he came back, we hung out a lot and he taught me how to surf. He's really good too so it motivated me to get better/go more. He went back to HI after a few years and we usually call each other after a good swell to catch up and talk story. He's one of the only friends from my hometown I still stay in touch with.

    Cory Lopez, too

Ahhh, you were going off about all the guys' idols being males, so I thought I'd introduce some she-male activity into the conversation...and since you frequently post about the French Canadians, I often wondered if you were familiar with the (ahem) Fine Young Lady. She's one of my personal faves.

And to top it off, I figured it was about time that this thread went off the rails.

i was a late bloomer into the surf world,i think I started in 2003 when I was finishing highschool.I didn't have the internet at the time,so all I had was old vhs tapes and the surfer/transworld surf mags.I always love reading a good story, people u never heard of doing crazy shyt.I read a lot, like todd chesser, the day he died,he said too many kooks out at waimai so he paddled out with 2 other dudes, and I think 2 of them died or just chesser.I wasn't around for the glory days, but have the glory days on vhs that I can no longer watch because vcr's are obsolete nowadays.

    img_0.jpg
Jason magers at waimae during the code black swell where bradshaw got that 80 footer or whatever.magers was the only guy who paddled out that day at waimae, borrowed a board from g.mcnamara, and just when he thought he was out,a clean up set approached.he was later arrested because they closed all the beaches.

but that's what drives me,seeing people doing the impossible.anyone can go out in 3 ft surf with 100 people and rip it apart, but standing on ur own, going to waves nobody wants a piece of on the biggest day of the decade and taking it on full swing.
