^^^THIS! Now you all know how it is that BMT is bangin' the finest hindu super-models and driving the fastest ride on his block (2015 black range rover hse 3.0-liter supercharged V6; 4WD, eight-speed automatic 340 hp @ 6,500 rpm, 332 lb-ft @ 3,500 rpm). He goes for the jugular without the slightest concern for his customer's interests or well being. Everybody here would do well to print out this sage advice and review it on the daily. Have it become your mantra. Then you too will soon be pulling down six figs and traveling to surf destinations abroad such as hawaii (jaws area) or mavericks (california coast). Needless I say more.

Working as a salesman is a great way to make a living as long as you are a good salesman and the product is really strong. You need both to be successful. Also have to love the phone. Lots and lots and lots of calls.

Salzsurf, I've been in sales for the last 18-19 years (damn that made me feel old) and I manage a group of 23 inside sales agents. What you want to do 1st is update your resume. Write it so that it's geared towards sales. Like others have said, use your IT background to get your start, as that will be the easiest transition into sales, giving you somewhat of a comfort zone and something that you can talk about naturally right out of the gates without any additional training.

Next what you want to do is start reading books on sales and success. I have a long list I could recommend if you're interested (PM me), just let me know. Start doing your homework by developing yourself through reading and hone your craft. Sales is an art so it will take time, but with enough dedication and willingness to learn and apply the principles you learn you can become a great sales person.

Don't listen to anybody who says you have to lie or be shady to be successful. Great salespeople tell the truth and are able to make sales by being honest. Sh*tty sales people are the ones who lie, steal, and cheat their way to the top, but eventually it comes back to bite them (usually). Don't be the type to fall into this trap and further the negative stereotype on sales people. There are plenty of honest, hard working salesmen who earn every dollar they get, and they earn it the right way with hard work, perseverance, consistent and persistent effort, and a positive attitude.

Next, don't fall in love with the first job you land just like you don't want to fall in love with the first girl you ever date. You most likely will be using the 1st sales gig as a springboard to a better one. Use that first opportunity to get a little experience under your belt. It gives you more time to hone your craft and get better at it. You will know within a year whether or not you want to stay with the company or not. Just be careful to not jump ship too quickly. Any sales job is going to take time to build a foundation or pipeline. You don't just walk in the door and start selling, so don't get frustrated when after two months you don't have any sales to speak of. I tell all my new hires to not even look at their results for the 1st 90 days and just get comfortable with the product and speaking on the phone. After the 1st 90 days I turn up the heat on them and start demanding a bit more of them and that's when the real sales people shine. If they aren't getting it at the 6 month mark, they will never get it. So keep that in mind when you start a new position.

    Continued on next post....

Like some others have said, ideally you want to find a product or service that you can sell that interests you. We don't all have that luxury but it certainly helps when it comes time to sell to the prospect / client. You want to be passionate about what you do, and if you aren't passionate it will affect your results. The more passionate and driven you are, likely the more successful you will be. Just remember, "people are more convinced by the depth of your conviction than the height of your logic." So don't get hung up on having just the right thing to say like great one liners or knowing everything there is to know about the product / service you are selling... focus more on HOW you sound while making your presentation. If you sound confident and passionate but are saying the wrong stuff, you will have higher results than if you sound boring and unsure but say all the right things.

Get ready to be a professional actor, because that's exactly what you'll become. You'll not only become an actor, but you'll also become a human lie detector, because they ALL lie. Never take them at face value. There is always more to the story then they are telling you. But that's ok, because that's where your acting comes in. Be prepared for every possible objection and that way you won't be caught off guard by anybody who tells you no for whatever reason. No doesn't always mean no btw, usually it just means not right now.

Anyways, i'll leave you with this...

Sales is a noble profession, don't let anybody tell you otherwise. You can make a good living even as a sh*tty sales person. Average sales people make up the majority. In my company the average sales person can make 60-80k/year. My top agents make 100-115k/year, and this 100% on the phone, no outside sales at all. If you are looking at doing outside sales, you can make good money there too, but it's a completely different animal and less of a guarantee, although there is a huge upside if you land a job with the right company that will be patient with you and allow you to build your base. Whatever you do, DO NOT take a job that is 100% commission, you will regret it if you do. In my company you get a 30k base + plus commission which can double or triple your salary. Plus paid vacation and full benefits.

Let me know if you have any questions or need any other advice, glad to help.

    I live by certain standards

I don't steal,I try not to lie except when im on here lmao, dont phuk the neighbor, and work a hard days work.

yea u can make great money being a sales person, but I look at it like ur stealing from people u don't know.im a nice person in real life,i abide by the laws,i don't biych at work even tho I do 99% of the work.

I find it disgusting how much money these sales people make.speaking in wall st terms.your job contributes to nothing and nobody.you are a parasite sucking the money out of hardworking americans.wtf do I need to own shares in Microsoft for lol?I always "maintain" my living situations, like I don't have money to buy a new car or a new surfboard.i really don't need any more money.mo money mo problemz.im not a greedy little d1cksnake jew canoedouche mobile.the only "wrong" thing I do is smoke a bit of reefer, and i don't smoke 10 times a day.i wouldn't even want to smoke that much,or make that much money.im fine where im at.

working in sales just means your a lazy no good fat American that should quit surfing and take up golf.now i see why some of u people biych about your arms or legs are tired lol.when u work a real job u don't have those problems.idk maybe im just hating, maybe i have too much pride and respect for my country, but i couldn't live a life that has me sitting in a chair for more than 2 hours a day.

I think you are confusing selling stock and selling product... Every product you buy has to be sold by someone.

I've been in sales for 10 years selling medical equipment. I make my own schedule and never go in to an office. I have not missed a swell or anything else I wanted to do because of work. And the money is great.

How is being a laborer any better for our country?

You no not what you speak of. I should put you over my knee and spank your ass in front of everybody but I won't embarrass you that way. Just don't go bashing an entire group of people with blanket statements like this, that's all I'm gonna say. I deal with "your type" all day long and have enough ammunition to bury you, but I won't. It's too easy.

All of you people who are up to your elbow in the assh*ole of our economy should pause for a moment to reflect on Cep's statement. It's hyperbolic but he's got a point.

Some of you may sell things people need, some of you may not. Fact remains that he is building the infrastructure of our country with his hands. You could argue that it takes someone special for either sales or construction, and you could argue that basically anyone could do either. But the fact remains that he is building something concrete. If the sh*t hit the fan, who ya gonna call? Your construction buddy or your buddy who sold xerox machines?

Nothing personal to some of you sales guys. NYNJ, people may need that medical equipment to get healthy. On the other hand, there's a whole slew of procedures that surgeons recommend because they are more profitable, and of course some of these involve medical equipment.

DPSUP, don't be offended cause you're selling Saltlife shirts and stickers. Without those, countless North Floridians would have to own up to their true identity- government pawns in the mandated social experiment that is Florida State.

Someone please tell me, why do I need a salesman for anything, if it is possible to order it directly from the company? Yes, sales positions by and large create a huge chunk of our service oriented economy and middle class. But why do I need them if I can compare 3,000 reviews of competing products on Amazon?

I went from selling furniture, to selling sobriety, to selling outdoor gear. Sell what you like or else it sucks. I almost failed a sales class in college amd told myself I would never get into sales. I hated selling furniture even though the money was awesome, I told myself I would never again get into sales, then I started working for a wilderness therapy company, and found I was essentially selling sobriety... it opened up some doors into the outdoor industry and bam found myslef actually selling something I enjoy amf believe in. Now I wouldnt have it any other way.

Who works in sales? Most of the richest people on earth, and on this forum, I reckon. I told my boss, who may be the world's greatest salesman, that only a few can do it. If you're good at it, you're very rare, and have $$$ out the wazoo. You also think it's simple for the rest of us without the sales gene. Sales people have to talk sh** to a level nearly impossible to comprehend for normal folks, like me. Not hatin on sales, just sayin it takes a special animule. If it weren't for my silver tongued boss, I'd be homeless. His sh** talkin gets me lots of construction work. I think being a good salesman, and being a good SI poster may have much in common. If you can do it, do it. Just be wary of the dark side Luke...

Don't worry bro. I don't take it personally. Everyone has the right to an opinion. But that doesn't make them right.

First. I was in construction and was a union electrician. I am plenty capable of working with my hands. If the sh!t hit the fan I'd call the guy that was able to work with his hands, but was motivated as well.

Second. I'm not talking about devices that DR's sell to make more $. I sell wheelchairs, beds, canes crutches etc... Stuff you need when you get old or hurt.

Third. You do need a salesmen. If everyone bought direct companies would need to hire salespeople to fill the demand. Those reviews you read on Amazon are about the companies you are buying from. Not the manufacturers (who I work for)...

So back to my point. How is tearing up a street to repave it and raise taxes supporting America, but manufacturing and selling a wheelchair to a supplier that your grandmother can get it from stealing?

Hey y'all sales wizards. Don't get me wrong. I know I'd be up the creek without my teflon tongued salesman boss. I just sit back and watch in amazed amusement while he gets on a roll. There he goes... I gots no problem with sales... Well, exceptin maybe real estate agents. Might draw the line there. They give me the willies.

Thanks for all the input everyone. I feel like regardless of profession, there are areas that have hard-working, honest people and scam artists; whether it be construction or sales or whatever else. It's all about the individual and the organization they choose to associate themselves with.

as I said my post was directed towards the "wall st" type of salesperson.im sure most of u on here are not on wall street, regardless its just my opinion,i tried to do the sale thing but it wasn't my thing.i like to build stuff and create new things.im kind of a MacGyver kinda person.i was watching "would u survive" on the weather channel and came up with a brilliant lifesaving device that's so simple.im 99% positive I will do nothing with it as I don't have money or the resources,or the SALES EXPERIENCE to market it.

yea we need sales, companies need to move their products, but when ur selling bs to regular people who don't need it,I think it should be a crime.and by the way,i recently watched the wolf of wall street so my hate is directed towards people like the character leo played in the movie.

robots build cars,u cant really use robots in my line of work,it just wouldn't be productive.
