i grew up on Taylor Steele and ...lost videos. it was a perfect formula of surfing, punk rock and the occasional tittie or drunk/stoned scene. now every single webisode opens with a 1-2 minute ridiculous smorgasbord of stupid "landscape/scenery" shots with filters and slowed down. it is literally un-watchable. what the hell man?

because magic is dead!! Jordy lands a huge rodeo flip, John John boosts a 10' alley oop, Julian and Klohe max out reverses with eyes closed and the moment the edits are done it's streaming to your mobile. Most of the Ams, team guys or locals are trying to differentiate themselves by their art because everyone surfs the same at that level; So much that sponsors are spitting and changing guys up like stale gum.

a 10 minute montage of seagulls flying, guys sitting in a log cabin sipping on pumpkin spice lattes laughing and such, loading up the retro looking van with their boards and gear, slo-mo footage of the guys running down the beach and frolicking while checking the surf, followed by 10 minutes of surfing broken-up by snippets of lifestyle footage.

This is due to the accessibility of high-quality cameras and video-editing software. Every douche with some money can now make a surf movie. Therefore, there has been a high influx of douchiness into the surf movie industry. The good videos are now just near-impossible to find.

The thing that I disliked about surf movies of old was that 90% was in slow motion. They hardly ever showed take off technique unless the guy eats schitt

one of my favorite slow mo's was the end of What's Really Going Wrong when Wardo lands what i'm guessing was the first backside 360 air. it.was.mental.

it's all subjective. whatever is "unwatchable" to you could be very watchable to someone else. a kid now can watch one of taylor steele's older videos and think, "wow, that video was very immature and unprofessional" and it could go the other way as well.

the surf industry has changed tremendously since those older punkish videos came out, and the industry is always changing and evolving. i understand that it's hard to accept change, especially being an older guy, but you just have to deal with it.

times are always changing whether you like it or not.

The old school surf movie is pretty much dead. The internet has taken over, and no one is buying DVDs anymore. Back in the day, it was a pretty solid business selling surf DVDs. I know, because I did it myself, with MIA, East Coast bodyboarding video. It is pretty much impossible to do that anymore, because people aren't going to spend $20-$30 for a DVD, when they are overloaded with 3 minute clips on Social Media or Swellinfo.
