Exactly. Most of the time it looks like a lake.

we can thank the obx for that one. they always block the swell from the south and the eastern shore blocks the swell from the north. basically, were in of the worst spots on the east coast. due to the lack of significant swell, our sandbars are also sh1t most of the time

they messed up the north end when they ran the storm drain pipes 1/2 mile out. the break at 79th st was sweet. it would break when a fish farted. use to have 3 line ups. now the beach is big and goes out to the outside break.

Is it true that the eastern shore blocks north swell? If you look at the map it seems like any north swell that would hit OCMD would make it Va beach.

no but it catches a big S swell, and with a NE wind it's off shore.

About the time the sandbars start to work the replenishment begins again. You'll have to chase the sand around until it begins to settle in one place and hopefully in a decent wave producing form. Seems like there is usually somewhere down there that has a little more sand than the rest of the spots. Luckily/unluckily there's a lot of parking so checking all 5 miles of the beach isn't the pain it once was.

Also, unlike the oceanfront areas, there isn't much structure to slow down the sideshore current. By the time a north-to-south current reaches SB it's trucking right along and all that incompatible sand migrates south to the refuge and false cape where the unreplenished beaches use it as god/allah/buddah/neptune/poseidon/santa intended.

lived there (well, NN) for three years and I don't think a beach visit went by where there wasn't a dredger 1/4- 1/2 mile out...

Offshore shallow continental shelf absorbs wave energy from those waves that have size. Up to 94% of the wave energy from a good 10-12 sec period SSE swell ( the one that is always overhead+ on Hatteras Island)

Because your not in Belmar, NJ- which has by far the best waves on the East Coast

Virginia Beach fires! what are any of you talking about? OK so maybe it only "fires" about 30 days out of a year. but maybe it doesn't seem very good because all of you suck at surfing.

This is soooo right. If you surf in VB, please quit now while your are still ahead.

Seriously, this irks me and I will happily tell you why...

When it's onshore winds, no one out. Seriously. If I had a nickel for every time that happens, it "cleans up" with a waist high wave and everyone is Rippy McRipperson. Here's a funny story...

I talk, let's call him, Jarvis Winkerbaum, to paddle out in a lovely, honkin, NE. Nice wind-driven bums out there. I see multiple heads unable to make it out. Next day its clean, same group plus 4,792 of their friends paddle out to the same spot, and talk about how much they surf. Cracks me up every time. Move to Cali bro, Move to Cali bro. Enjoy the radiation brah. Check those rising levels and bring me a tin hat while you're at it. Ha, I will gladly wrap a burito with it and heat it in the oven cuz I hungry. I a hungry redneck. feed me a burrito. Quit surfing. East Coast beach breaks will destroy your life.

What else happened that day...hmm...paddled out by myself, then all the lurkers come out from their lairs to watch if theres a wave that some D bag like me can ride. Oh if I can, they can. Time to paddle out. Sure there's a whole desolate beach, but where I am it is dangerously underpopulated and I need someone to paddle next to me. "Hey bud, any waves?" I'm like yeah all along the beach, but this particular spot is better than all the others. I hope you brought all of your friends. This is never received well because these same folks say all day long "there are no waves", OK, but you quote "surf all the time". Shut up. Better yet, I will shut up

I take that all back, please surf only during surfing season. This is not surfing season and your wetsuit has a hole in it.

Man, when I find a wave, I literally sneak to it. You catch one and its Brofest.

i dont know how many times thats happened to me too killa. im lucky enough to live down here at the ocean front and can go whenever and check it. if its over thigh high and rideable for more than 1 second, im on it. and as soon as someone sees me out. they paddle out literally right next to me. unless i know you, please don't bother me for at least the first hour. i like my quiet tine.

I see the ocean every day. It's like seeing a pic of my first love. It's nice to be with the old usual. It's the same tho.
