Why don't we spend more time discussing fitness and nutrition?

I've been toying with the idea of getting seriously into freediving. Not the little stuff, but making a real study of the sport and train to get good at it.

I go to one or two free dive forums and they are filled with training advice. Is freediving harder than surfing? Is it more important to train for one than the other?

On any given freedive forum you'll find breath-up techniques, breath hold training and pre-dive nutrition advice on the first page. But nothing similar on any given surfing forum.

I guess I didn't really expect a serious conversation, not on this forum. I already have my workouts down. But it would be nice to trade tips with others who share my same passion for surfing. But we don't do that. Other sports or activities like surfing do, but not us.

I don't view surfing as a job. But so much of my life revolves around it, it's natural to want to invest the time out of the water to excel at it.

Hadn't read the while tread. Will later. But for the time being I'll give you my routine/habits.

    As far as working out....
    -I don't lift.
    -Yoga mostly.
-I do what i think is called HIT. High intensity workouts. Could be wrong. It basically looks something like this. 15 burpees. 15 push ups. A minute plank. 15 lunges. 15 of something else that i don't know they name of. 1 min rest. Repeat x5. Ill change what 5 things i do. Sometimes i do more surf related things that involve twisting motions. Sometimes I'll do more "traditional" exercises.
-Runs here and there but usually not unless i hadn't surfed in a while and want a good cardio workout.

As far as diet. I'm not a big guy. I weigh 140-150. But i will say I'm NOT the type of guy who can eat like crap and not gain weight. With that being said I'm not super strict, but i follow these few rules fairly tightly.

    - nothing fried
    - no sweets. Candy. Cookies. Chips. Cake. Nothing like that
    - no red meat or pork. Chicken, Turkey, and fish only. I am very strict about that one.
    - no soda. Very strict on that too.
    - lots of fruits and what not as my breakfast. Veggies with dinner.
-if i eat out or something or even cooking at home. I don't like things that are super greasy. Luckily i got this burrito joint across the street from me that makes go food with not allot of grease. Kinda rare.
    - lastly is cheese. I do eat cheese. And love cheese. But i try not to over do it. If i eat allot of cheese one day, ill completely avoid it the next day or two

Just read the thread. I do what i do so i can surf better, for longer (in terms of a lifetime). Will i ever be pro? No. Not even close. Ever. But it's what i love to do and of working out and eating right helps, which it does, i want to do it. Nothing like a job to me. I also enjoy working out oddly. I also enjoy working (i have a physical job). So for me it's not a chore. It's something of be doing anyway. I Just tweaked how i workout to benefit my surfing.

Yes. Going beyond your limits freediving will kill you faster than going beyond your limits surfing.

I've mentioned before in a different thread, but I do enjoy free diving. It's a good way to test yourself and your limits, also your ability to remain calm. Or bench presses, not sure if that's been discussed as I'm too lazy to read the first 7 pages, but I hear that helps make up for the fact you have a small dink

Good question, and it's why,not what. We all know the hows and the whats. It's the why why why that is the tricky question.

Here's why. You see a guy non chalantly paddle into a twleve foot heaving peak, gracefully spring to a crouch, nail the bottom turn, stall, and get pitted and come flying out with the spit, all realxed, back arched, then do a casual off the lip cutback into the soup. Familiiar? It's Pipeline.

The great ones make it look easy. No huffing and puffing, it's just not cool.

That's why surfing is not like golf, with all its anal retentative fixations on everyting from stance to club size....oh, now that I think about it, maybe it is, BUT there is not enough money in it to go that mainstream exept clothng, not equiment, or training, personal coaches or video simulators, etc.

So to summarize, the two main reasons surf fitness and teqnique are not a big deal like in most sports is because there is not enough monetary potential in surfing (except fashion) and it's just not cool.

I hope this clears things up.

Freediving in RI seems less appealing than somewhere like HI or the Caribbean, like regular diving due to visibility.

Surfing forums suffer the same problem as rock/ice climbing forums even skiing forums when it comes to glades, off trail stuff - the places to do this are a limited resource so people don't want to share info about spots. This seems to leak over into non-location specific aspects of discussing the activities. Free diving is like skydiving or something.

I am 49 and ever since I quit smoking at 29 I have had a few extra around the mid section. I work outside, am fitter than most, but still developed that little pot belly. Recently I went to PR and got my ass kicked. I can still surf, but don't have the stamina to surf very long anymore. At my local break maybe an hour and a half. I can relate with younger guys catching all the waves while I am trying to get a breath. I battle asthma too.

Well I decided no more of that. I have for years been trying to eat better and exercise some, but never really stuck with it. I want to be the 50 year old guy that still rips. That is my motivation. I have started doing Bikram Yoga, HIIT Sprints, and xing out the fast food, sodas etc. I still can give up that sugar in my coffee, but I have reduced it. It has been a month and I am already feeling better, have lost a couple of pounds and can run longer, and my back feels better. No I do not want to bulk up, but I do want to be able to compete and still surf into my golden years. Fortunately I have a very cool wife that is down with the plan and doing her own things to stay fit as well.

Now that I have a business kids and a mortgage I simply do not surf often enough to keep me fit for surfing like when I was younger. When I was younger surfing was all I had to do. Now that I have all that and I'm a little older I find I need to add to it if I want to surf at a competent level

RI is a world renowned spearfishing destination. Visibility is unbelievable on good days, and it's good a lot.

I used to freedive and spear lots of fish, but they are too small around here now unless you go 60 ft or more. It's more fun to bring a camera and "shoot", lately. Little tropicals and a stray ray. that sort of thing. Not the same rush as a 20 lb nassau grouper. Now they only show up after big storms, after they get blown in.

Groupers don't get "blown in". They are taking advantage of the waters being turned over and are looking for food.

Yeah, for some reason I was thinking of the free diving where people ride down on weighted sleds, etc... My bad.
