I'm a beginner surfer and I've read a little bit about wind direction and its effect on the waves. I've always heard an offshore wind is best, but I've also heard people complain that the waves are harder to catch in offshore winds. I'm new so it's hard for me to tell if it's the wind or me. So, for east coast waves, what kind of winds are best, mediocre and downright awful?

Offshore wind below 20mph is optimum. When it starts cranking over 20, it can be harder to paddle into the wave. But, the stiff offshore winds also make for hollower conditions.

As a beginner, look for light wind days - onshore or offshore.
