Winter Webbed gloves?

Discussion in 'Global Bodyboarding Talk' started by ExtremeSpongerChicks, Jan 1, 2008.

  1. Hi everyone,
So I found out that 7mm only come in mittens not lobster claw. Hmmm... I would REALLY like to get something to help keep my hands warn AND help my paddling power.

Does anyone know if the Power webbed gloves come in 7mm for winter? Or if they are flexible enough to slip over my lobster claws?

    :D

    gloves

I've never seen a webbed glove that was thick neoprene except from some kayaking site but that was years ago and I've forgotten the URL. My friend still has a pair and loves em. I;ve got a pair of O-Neill 5mil gloves (fingers) that are nice and warm, and I think HotLine out of Santa Cruz, CA makes a good coldwater glove. The webbing can be tough on your shoulders if you've got issues there, since the joints and muscles aren't used to that amount of resistance. Good luck.

    Hey there,
you are not the first person that has said that the webbed gloves give your shoulders a mean work out hmmm, I thought that was supposed to help more than hurt the situation

One surfer from the surf shop said that the 7mm mittens will help with the paddle power simply because they are mittens and are thicker. I might have to save the webbed gloves for the spring time :D

    Thanks~

    Webbed gloves

I have actually heard of injuries to shoulders being exacerbated by using webbed gloves. Never heard of the mitten effect. no advice there.

It's a good point you make about shoulder problems. I do have something going on in my right shoulder when paddling without webbed gloves, so it's pretty likely the gloves would make it worse.

I should have thought of this myself--I remember noticing increased strain in my leg muscles when first using fins.

  6. Yikes

Okay fellas, you have talked me out of the webbed gloves, I'll just use 7mm mittens and do extra push-ups!

Hope your shoulder get better!

Eh, I'm too old for this sport, that' s my problem.:D

  8. Never TOO OLD!

I just watched a program about this huge surf break in Cali, that has 30-50 foot waves.
Most of the people that were surfin that break were in their 40s and 50s.

Thats what I love about this sport, you can look to the left of the line up and see a 14 year old and to your right is a 55 year old. Hope I am still boarding at 55! :D

I hope I'm still boarding at 55, too. Well, that's only 4 years off for me. I hope I'm still boarding at 65. I wish I'd taken it up earlier in life, though. It's hard to teach an old dog new tricks.:)

    age relevancy

Sponging keeps you young. I'm closer to 55 than any of you and not slowing down any. Its cool that our culture doesn't force us to associate just with our age group. I've got good friends I ride with who are over thirty years younger than me and it doesn't really make a big difference.

That break in Nor-Cal you saw the program on was probably Mavs. Not a real good sponger wave (too bumpy) and dangerous because of the rocks on the inside.. When it breaks at size it's a zoo with camera boats, jetskis etc. Plus a lot of those guys are riding to either make money or prove something. That changes the whole vibe.

Surfing in general is so strong a bond that it transcends age constraints.

What's this all got to do with webbed gloves you ask?

    who the hell knows.
    L8tr :D

The break was in mavericks and there are all sorts of hazards there. From sharks to rocks to jellyfish, not to mention the "killer" size waves. A professional surfer from Japan, I do not recall his name, drowned there... its no joke. I have no desire for those size waves, though I commend all surfers and spongers that take it to the limit like that, and if they are older...thats even more commendable. Keep on ridin, it keeps you young :D

Mitts or claws will help with your paddling. Make sure that you are cupping your hands as you paddle, also.

Mavericks is a break in Half Moon Bay, CA. Mark Foo drowned there in 1994. He was a well known big wave surfer. They didn't hold the big wave contest during 2007, but Mavericks has blown up a few times during the fall, so maybe they'll hold it this year. The guys that ride Mavs are crazy, I give them a lot of respect. I'd never be able to do it. I have myself signed up for the Contest Greenlight through the website, like a dope LOL, so I know if it goes off. They have a live stream on the site, so I can live vicariously.

    I mind-surf 50 foot waves all the same. :D

    webbed gloves

    whats up everybody

I bodyboard up in the Northeast and I use excel 5mm gloves with 2mm h20 webbed gloves over them. They keep my hands extra warm and i get excellent thrust from the webbed gloves.. I also feel like they have improved my stroke and hand positioning. There not all that comfy when it comes to holding your rail and grip is sometimes an issue but definetly worth it. I picked them up for 20 buck at adventureout.com out in Santa Cruz. CA.

As for the added strain on your shoulders I really haven't noticed any...I am sure a good stretch before and after your sesh should help!!!

That's good to know. I'm definitely interested in the webbed gloves so I'm hoping to rest up my shoulder for a while and wait for the water to get back up over 60 degrees before I go out again, I'll give them a try then.
