On the market this summer, according to board maker Steve Walden.

As he produces more & more of these things, the price will fall & more of these things will be in the water.

Remember these last days of pure surfing, fellas, because the kook universe is about to take over the waves.

No way... won't be tolerated... at least where I live... I just lost a lot of respect for Walden.

i don't think it'll catch on. aquajet surfboard, anyone?
this sort of thing has been tried before & failed. i think this will be the same thing. like stranded said, it won't be tolerated.

not to mention the fact that, at least here in the midatlantic, the paddle isn't really long enough to justify such a thing on all but the biggest of days (even then it's a stretch). & i have a feeling that, not being duck divable, the board will just get pushed back to the beach as it tries to punch through the impact zone. then the battery will run out & the person will be stuck. i bet that would be entertaining to watch, tho! just picture it: guy w/ a powered board (aka: more $$ than brains) mistimes the sets & tries to paddle out while a solid, hurricane generated 8-10ft set rolls through. it'd be like watching someone in a little fishing dory try to punch through!

^^ not with the steve walden article...

The people out on the water will be treated like SUPers so I think most of the people who have these will be surfing alone.

AND the thing is 13 pounds heavier than a regular surfboard. I'd like to see people do the same maneuvers on this thing as they do on a regular surfboard..

    Please excuse my attitude, but...

old people think technology is the next step. Young people hate technology and want to drive woody's and ride alaia's. Such a conundrum. VB is so packed full of kooky longboarders, 50 something "im still cool" SUP riders, and elitest pre-teen "locals", I dont even see it effecting me. I hate you all anyways, thats why I surf in sandbridge.

    Pura vida, 8==> heads!

The only way i see this as an acceptable application is for disabled or elderly surfers. When I'm 90+ years old I might be getting one of these.

Agreed with Kenny Powers: the thread didn't have the Walden article / aspect.

This latest article is dated early May 2011. This brings this moto-thing concept very up to date. With Walden's rep & clout & reach in the surfing world, he will sell a lot of these.

Last year in VB, on one wknd when the greeen bars were projected, I counted over 400 people in the water from the Neptune statue to the runoff pier up north. Hundreds more were in the water from Neptune on down to the jetty. Seems to me that some of those people will buy one of these moto-things just to get an advantage for waves over the other 390 surfers.

I could see where American surfers in established lineups will try to keep this moto-thing out of their spots. But in the touristy spots, it's a clusterf*** so I think that you'll see it in the more moneyed places. Probably not in Hawaii unless the rider has a long-standing wish to be beaten.

Also, I wonder if other countries will have the same negative reaction to this beast as many USA surfers, meaning, will surfers from places like S. America or Asia really care about 'la pura vida' as Lee so delicately put it.

BTW, Lee, those owners of those million-dollar oceanfront houses in Sandbridge may be the first to show up with these moto-things, 'cause they have the wherewithal to chunk out 4k for them. Let us know how that works out for you guys ...

My vote: no way should these moto-things be allowed in surfing lineups. They're motorized vehicles, if you will, and as such should be either properly licensed and / or subject to the same restrictions that jetskis are in many locales.

Surprisingly, very VERY few locals in SB surf. If they do, its the day of the decade. Sure, crowds come to the market and the S-turns, but you have to know someone to park where I park. Anyways, If you can't paddle there, you dont belong in the line-up, IMHO. ESPECIALLY on the east coast. We dont have any outer reefs or slabs. Its all pretty much the same.

Look at the bright side, they are not in your local costco yet...

I think NJ, knowing NJ, would classify these as personal watercrafts and require a permit and possibly be registered. Lifeguards are probably going t be forced to restrict them from beaches during guard hours given they are 15lbs heavier and self propelled. Thats the platform I would use at a city council meeting!!!

Glad to hear that's still true... returning to VB for the summer... I love the secret spot that is in plain sight. No leash law, no crowd... only residents and Navy folk. It's not even secret just hard to access and most people are to lazy to try... "lets all go to Croatan!!!!!!!!"
