If anyone decides to make the trip out to the shoals, PLEASE make sure you have all your safety gear ready to go, accidents do and will happen. Its not a place for the faint of heart, your going out when the sea is at its roughest maddest most pissed off time, make sure you are prepared mentally and physically to handle what she throws at you.

The ultimate setup for doing pictures at the shoals would be someone driving you around on a wave runner, but since it wraps around you have to be WAY inside to get the shots, and that WILL set you up to be taken out by a cleanup set if your not careful, trust me on that.

You do not want to wind up like this:

i'd imagine if you got stuck on the inside, it could be very difficult to get back in position? I'm sure there is a lot of water moving around. Did you have a ski or just a boat?

We were on a boat, which made it very difficult to get on the inside. Unfortunately its not a channel break where you can hang out on the side and get shots, you have waves coming at you from different directions depending on where you are. It takes 2 people one to drive and one to take the photo's.

If you get stuck on the inside at the wrong time your done, you have to try and paddle out to the side and then all the way around to get back out to the main break. It is alot of paddling.

I paddles to the wedge and then out to the shoals one fall I think of 03 and it was epic, over a dozen people were out. Only caught a few waves before the tide killed it, but my last wave I rode (mixed between standing and laying down) to with in 100 ft of the shore...
