got a little chip on the leading edge of a glassed in wooden skeg. was just gonna use solarez and sand it down but have never dealt with a wood fin before so thought i'd check with the gurus here before proceeding. it's an eps board with epoxy glass. any tips?
I've never really thought of suncure as a permanent fix. Sand the damage out and fill with suncure, then rough sand and lay a small patch of cloth that extends past your fill. Sand and feather carefully. IMHO the layer of cloth gives some strength and seals the repair from water seeping in around the edges. Is your board home-made? Post a pic. I bet it looks pretty cool. . . .
cool thanks. was worried about using too much material and making one side too heavy or slightly larger. very small ding but it's definitely open.. the board is a little mini simmons with some channels out the back. definitely not shaped by me! that's the chip on the fin closest to camera.
nice board. i wouldnt worry about it too much. if you do anything maybe use some wax paper to keep sanding to a minimum
board looks cool.. yeah before I saw the pic I was expecting a lot more damamge than that. Just take your time sanding and it'll be super easy and won't even be noticable
Solarez has fiberglass in it and becomes structural. So def a permanent fix. Make sure you have the solarez for epoxy if that's what your board is.
thanks for the tips everyone. it is a pretty small ding but the wood is exposed so wasn't sure how critical the problem was. what would the process be for fixing a larger ding with a bigger chunk of wood missing? same as a normal ding? fill it, shape it, sand it?
Depends on how much time you want to spend on it. If a decent size chunk of wood was missing on such a pretty fin, and i had a bit of time, i might even buy a little 3$ can of plastic wood to match the color and fill in the missing wood. Sand out the wood repair to the fin shape, then glass over the wood repair with a bit of cloth, sand hotcoat, sandout. Liquid suncure resin would work fine.
