What if guy 2 dies next year and has missed many mediocre sessions because hes chasing greenbacks. I guess theres a happy medium.YOu gotta work but I gotta surf any time i get the chance. Everyone has a priority list but you cant have all work and no play. Lifes to short.

Holy hell, man ...glad your alright. I got a little freaked out last week when i pulled a cutback and lost it and went head first into the water...it wasn't very deep and I nailed my forehead on the bottom. Luckily, the little bit of water did slow me down enough so I didn't break my damn neck, but it was a close one.

Good conversation I was Guy #1, Guy #2, & Guy #3.\r\n#1. I went to college but avoided a serious job because I wanted to surf... got fired some but mostly just drifted from job to job. I wanted to use my degree to teach just not in any crappy (inland) schools. Worse part is I was living in VB! What the hell was I thinking... not gonna surf a lot anyway. Eventually drifted around NC & at age 25 was still living in my parents house while being a high school security guard. Needless to say chicks didn\'t take me seriously.\r\n#2. I took a good teaching job inland an hour and 45 minutes from surf where I had to develop the schools curriculum from scratch to start an AP program. No one else wanted to take the job and they were desperate because school was starting in 3 days. I busted my tail to repay their faith in me and surfed very little during 10 months out of the year. I still got some of the macking swells because school would close for hurricane\'s flooding rains and Nor\'easter\'s snow as well as surf trips every summer.\r\n#3. Being Guy #2 was cool but guy #3 finds the ultimate balance. I took the padded resume and now I live on a beach in a consistent corner of the world with easy access to many 5 star surfing destinations. I surf everyday I want and teach easy hours 8-3 with 3 1/2 hours off mid day every other day. No kids yet so the wife and I can be selfish but it will soon come to an end I\'m sure. O well get it while you can. Remember how hard we were cheering on the \"Should I go\" forum for the young buck to move out to Cali.

Its all about the bennies baby... i got paid to surf all day today and didn't even have to use a vacation or sick day. Surfed one of many empty sick beach barrel set-ups between rodanthe and the lighthouse. Waist to chest, plus sets, super duper hollow and not another surfer in sight. Just me and the flies...

it doesn't matter what you do, ultimately, the key is to always have goals and objectives. Immediate, short- and long-term. I sat in a cubicle for years, missing every swell, and it didn't really bother me. I knew I needed to attain certain skill levels and industry knowledge to get to where I am now, which is business owner (i.e. boss, i.e. I decide when I want to work and when I want to surf, like this morning when I decided to surf from 8 am- 12 noon, it was fun--warm sun, clean thigh-waist occ chest) I live and work in the same town - zero commute - and the beach is not more than a quarter mile from either my home or my office. Set realistic goals and objectives and don't make rash decisions based only on your immediate desires, and you'll probably have a decent set up before too long. Pop culture glorifies and romanticizes the immature, self-centered fool who lives only for the moment, but do yourselves a favor and don't buy into that bull****.

Guy #5, I live 3 hours from the surf, I met my wife as I was contemplating a move to San Diego, but her career has no job options there so we had to stay. I work at a place that has great leave time, and travel happens to be to some surf destinations. My wife gets the surfing and even got me a surfboard after I proposed to her. I have surfed at least once a month, every month for 90 in a row. I generally don't take sick days to surf on my usual spots, but twice a year I surf great waves. I hit San Diego at least once a year and get to Costa Rica about once a year so I get epic waves. I would love, love to live by the coast but right now it's not in the cards. But in 15 years when my wife wants out of the Govt. We will sell out house and move to the coast.
