Seeing the thread about the worst wipeouts got me curious about another part of the surfing world. What's your worst experience with locals, or which location has nasty people. I've always had good experiences personally, except this one time but it wasn't bad. One guy at Ocean City, NJ decided to follow me all around the lineup. Everywhere I went, he followed always 5 feet away and tried to take every wave but failed every time. So I was tired of this guy and started to not care when he started paddling, and eventually he started screaming at me. We got into a huge argument and he dropped the "I live here" line. I just laughed and told him to stop raping my space. Then he left. Like I said not bad.
In Hawaii at Makaha.... I think that my buddy and I were the only white people and we were getting cussed out by every 11 year old in the water. A kid that I later found out was eight called me an "Albino *****". I'm pretty sure that I got dropped in on on every wave at some point or another.
My bro was killin' it at Maria's and taking all the waves which pissed the locals off. Finally the big guy on the big board on the outside said "If you catch another wave I will break you in half gringo." The other Puerto Ricans laughed..... so he paddled in. Don't blame him since he was only 18, half their size, and out of his league on this one.
locals i hate the word "local." i go surf where ever I want, and I never have problems. more or less thats the case for anyone. the only people i ever see giving so much attention to out of towners are the "locals" who never left the damn state that they are in. the best surfers i know get every wave they want because they earned the best waves. "a local" who demands every 2' wave at north side gets what they deserve...non sense!
When I was in Puerto Rico, I had someone come up to me and ask me if I had a ticket to surf there... Fairly humurous.
Had local guy in the USVI talk to me like he was my buddy then I caught him casing my campsite . I sat at the picnic table and was looking out the side of my eyes through the trees and I could see him leaning around the bathhouse to see if I was still there. I found a ranger and turned him onto the guy. Turned out he had this kid with dreds that was his lookout, crazy stuff .
Penultimate Localism The attendant at the Inlet parking lot wanted me to pay $2.50 for the one hour that I had parked there. Imagine that? Talk about localism. I mean, did he think I was a tourista from Philly or something?
seaside nj gets bad in the summer because it gets so crowded. i never surf there because i always get people telling me to piss out because they live there and i dont, god forbid i live a few miles away in normandy beach. so i say screw them and surf up the street from my house. waves arent so top notch but i have a blast and there is never more then 4 people in a line up
Conljw, i live a mile north of you and never surf the pier in the summer but I never find the crowd to be that tough theres actually a lot more beginner surfers there in the summer but it is crowded whats worse is that the 4 times I've surfed it in the summer the water smelled like a cesspool, I think there is some leaky sewage tank or something that can't handle the summer population. I surf there all winter and the water is clean and the crowd isn't an issue as long as you can surf well. I think localism is barbaric and caveman like that is reserved for not too intellegent ra-ra-ra types. Skill is the ultimate decider. The better you are the more waves you get. If some kid is surfing better than you and is getting more waves and instead of learning how to surf better you just pis and moan who is the idiot? Personally I've only witnessed a few minor localism events done to others and have never instigated one.
Seaside, NJ Conljw.. thats why you actually HAVE to get up in the morning.. at 630 with me and vin in the summer.. when its still foggy out.. its glassy and empty. Theres no crowd.. yeah but normandy with you isnt bad.. haha mostly laughs and good times. ________ vaporizers
