Since LB Crew got us thinking about the best surfing invention, I thought it only fair to post about the worst surfing invention. I'll start; 1) Surfboard wall sling (basically a suspension system that hung your board in a strap anchored on the wall - nose in pocket at the bottom with the center fin though a slit, fins out away from the wall and tail resting against wall) one accidental bump and call your ding guy. 2) Ape Gloves (neoprene web gloves - hot for a brief minute in the mid-80s) so goofy 3) the fin puller (idk if that's what it's called) just go to your granny's and grab her mason jar opener (it's a neoprene/rubber disc, about a buck at the grocery store) 4) FCS Fusion plugs - the figure 8 design tweaks torsion through the plug in weird ways and usually blows the box out - don't get me started on the FCSII- 2 minutes to change your fins gonna kill your amp session (slow down Kelly) ...
I think this one is harder than the best invention question. Lots of the bad things we discussed in that thread do have benefits. Surf cams can make a certain spot crowded but other surrounding spots empty. Wetsuits are great but allow more kooks to surf longer (especially in northern states). List goes on and on. I would say SUPs. But outs not the SUPs i have an issue with. It's the lack of etiquette of the rider. LBs too. I like a good log, but it allows someone with little ability to get in the water and into a wave. So whatever has drived these types into the water without learning proper etiquette. That's the worst invention. Internet, surf "style" clothing brands, surf industry in general..... one if not all of those. And probably some more. And also the Ben gravy vlog. Alot of dudes with go pros trying waaaaay to hard to replicate him. Don't call me big dog or say it's nuking or ask me what me claim is..... please
no the old fcs plugs made small holes when damaged, after the pos fig 8 model came out we switched to futures. The fig8 model created a huge hole ripping out what ever foam was left in the area.
I want to say the internet - but if I'm honest, I really like the internet and how easy it makes it to check buoys, forecast, cams, etc. I do hate the softboard trend. I think the price of entry into the sport has dropped significantly compared to ten years ago, and that has helped clog lineups with even more people who have no clue as to what they're doing than at any other point in my life.
figure 8 sucked 2. Basically original fcs single plugs sucked and few had enough knowledge to anchor them right (usually pushed up through the deck or ripped out completely. However, it did lead the way for more innovation and a better product (Futures)
