Do you any of you guys recommend a particular type of wrist brace that would be good for surfing? I fell on concrete and caught myself a few weeks ago and it either sprained my wrist or broke something in my hand. I can pretty much move my wrist freely without pain now but I still cannot put my weight on it so popping up is near impossible right now. I need something that won't restrict my movement too much but provide stability in the wrist so I can get to my feet, and won't get water logged. Anybody been down this road before?

most likely an anti-inflamatory will help as much as a brace, assuming its not broken.

Been taking Aleve, Advil, Ibuprofin, etc., it helps dull the pain but still can't put any pressure on it. I'm going out after work tomorrow and Wednesday, so i'm looking for a brace that will allow me to put pressure on it so I can paddle out and pop up without further injuring myself. I'm going to PR in a month and I really will be pissed off if I can't do anything but SUP surf, which is fun, but not the only thing I do.

Might want to, but probably won't till after the honeymoon. Don't exactly want a cast on my hand on wedding day or while in PR. I can get along just fine till then if I get a proper brace. Was looking at this one but not sure if it's ok to use in the water or not...

maybe just an air cast. if they want to cast you, just tell them to wait and get you through the trip.

This happened to me in last year. Was playing soccer, got tripped, went down on my wrist. Same thing, had trouble popping up, felt like a strain and I couldn't put weight on it. I tried to deal with it for 3 weeks and also thought about using a brace, I tried athletic tape, etc. You are going to have to see a doctor. If it won't get better, it needs to be immobilized. But here's the bad news. You probably broke your scaphoid bone.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scaphoid_bone

So healing time for me was about 3 months. Mine was not "displaced", in other words, just a crack. It was immobilized and in 6 weeks it was checked for healing and it was, so I went to a brace for 2 more weeks. Still no surfing. After that they claimed it was "healed" but I still couldn't put much weight on it and they said no surfing for a month. After a month I was able to at least pop up, but it was still tender and had sort of dull pain. It took until about 9 months (no joke) until I could pop up without pain. Getting old is a *****.

The doctor might be lenient with you and let you go with a wrist brace for the wedding if you totally don't want to go to a cast, but you'll potentially be delaying healing time.

I broke my wrist back in February...they do removable braces for the most part now a days. The reason you need to go to the DR. is if it is broken, you need to know if it is set right. If it's more than 10 degrees off, you will more than likely need it reset. Also if it's broken and not needing resetting, you might need to hold off on using it, so as to not cause more serious problems. You can go to a walk in clinic to get the info you need...knowing is half the battle.

My wrist was less than 10 degrees and got the brace off after 5 weeks, but I can still feel my tendon and muscles having to readjust to the change.

Amen. I broke the outside bone in my hand about 8 yeras ago. Was told to stay out of the water but ignored it and rebroke the bone before it completely set. Took another 6-8 months before it was right. Not fun. Hands and wrists are complicate items and don't work well if messed up.

How hard did you fall? Did you trip or get wrecked on the skateboard? Reason I ask is because I too broke my scaphoid a few years amongst other bones in my wrist (got dealt on my snowboard). My surgeon gave me the low down on this little f'er. If it doesn't heal correctly you'll be sure to have arthritis pretty bad in that hand when you get older. Blood flows through it somehow or another and if it's broken, obviously blood flow is inhibited and the bone will begin to decay. Mine was in half so they put a screw through it and I haven't had a problem with it since.....catch up with me in 30 years and I may be telling you otherwise :(

Go to the DR, dude. Deny the cast if you really have to but I would give it the proper attention when you get back. Until then, highly doubt any brace is going to really help you out unfortunately. <Debbie Downer>

You may be right, but hoping you are wrong. I will definitely be seeing a dr. if it doesn't get any better. I'm praying it's just just a matter of time.

i recall having an injured wrist that seemed to last forever. I don't remember how it happen, it was years ago. But i do remember not being able to surf well with it. I didn't wear anything while in the water, but got an older/simple style ace bandage/brace thats made for your wrist, just to keep it strengthened/supported while out of the water. seemed to help alot. If its alot of pain- see a DR. I remember having some pain- but mostly the inability to but any pressure on it.

It was a skate thing my nephew has (i think it's called a rip stick), all you do is move back and forth and they go, only problem is they have these tiny wheels like you see under a shopping cart, they rotate 360 degrees on a swivel while rolling, never thought i'd fall trying it, as I use to skateboard pretty well back in the day (nearly sponsored), but this was completely different (as I found out). Anyways, rug went out from under me and I caught myself with the palm of my hand and got up grabbing my wrist. It was tender but I kept messing with it trying to "work it out" but it just made it worse (duh). So i've been leaving it alone and it's feeling a little better than it was, but not quite there yet.

Thanks everybody, I just walked over to Sports Authority and tried those braces you may use for skating / rollerblading, it acts as a splint with a plastic piece that goes over the wrist and palm of your hand and also a small piece on top of the wrist to prevent too much movement. I was able to do a push up without pain but I was putting most of my weight on the part of my upper hand still exposed up by the knuckle area because of the plastic piece that bulges out. These seem to be ok, but the only part I don't like is that plastic guard sticking out so far, as it may ding or dent up my board upon impact. I'm going to check a couple others out, but if nothing else seems to work I may try one of those.

Broke my scaphoid years ago. Pretty much had the same experience as others have written. Just beware it can be broken and you can still do things you wouldn't think it was possible to do with a broken wrist. I could do pullups with no problem or pain but bending my wrist backwards was a no go. I taped the hell out of it and even inserted the plastic part of the old rollerblade/skateboard wrist guard in the tape job which worked pretty well. You could even add some foam to the hard edges of the plastic to protect your board.

Fast forward 4 months and I finally go to the Dr. who says while looking at the xrays "See these 2 bones here? It should be 1 bone!" oops! Had to have a piece of my hip bone screwed into my wrist. Spent one of the best summers for waves boozin on the beach watching everyone else surf. :(

i'll have to look at the other wrist braces but if nothing else seems to do the trick i'll probably try that out. Sucks yours required taking bone from your hip, hope mine isn't that bad.
