No I dont believe they should get facked up on their free time if it is considered illegal and they are promoted as one of the top competitors surfing on the world tour. If it is a personal choice and they test positive, they should be dealt with accordingly. They are all adults and no one should have to hold their hand.

Marketing has everything to do with this topic. The WSL is currently being marketed towards the younger generation of surfers. Imagine.......Thousands of kids from all over the world go online and order a Gabriel Medina T-shirt because that is who they admire and want to be like when they grow up. They line the beaches at the Rio Pro or Pipe Masters to get autographs and take a picture. Months later Gabriel Medina tests positive for cocaine. For the next year he is on the downward spiral and eventually ends up in rehab after nearly dying from an overdose. Do some of these kids follow in Medinas footsteps because he is their role model? Possibly. Does the WSL get a bad image as a result? Yes.

And dont say it can't happen, because AI was a victim and Bruce almost followed in his footsteps. It was also rumored that when Owen Wright was injured last year at Pipe, he was apparently partying a little too hard the night before. Im sure when Slater voices his opinion saying that their is a problem on the tour with "recreational drug use", he isn't lying.

Or people can stop acting like pro athletes are supposed to be perfect citizens who never get f'ed up and stop using them as "role models" because that concept is stupid to begin with. How about stop looking for another person to show your kid how to act and be a good parent and teach them how to act through your personal example.

IDK, seems dumb to hold another human being up on a pedestal because they are really good at something. So what if Kelly is the best surfer in the world, doesn't mean I want my kid to study his every move and act like him. No, I would tell him to be the best him he can be. Be yourself. Don't try to be like someone else. And I would teach him that these pros are human beings, capable of making mistakes and they do make them often, just like you and I.

They are not angels, they like to have fun like everybody else. They might do something crazy like get drunk, or heaven forbid, smoke a joint. Then you have the hard core druggies, there's always going to be a handful. So just expect that and don't be disappointed when you hear your favorite surfer gets busted for something. They're human.

    Two comments:
First, Marketing does play a role.
Second...have you ever gone to a Pipe Masters or anything similar?? The cameras, purposely, exaggerate everything to please market managers of clothing companies. There usually is only 200-300 person on the beach watching the shiit show. And that is on a big contest day. This isn't football, baseball, basketball, or hockey. The cameras try to make it appear as if it is, that is for sure.
Viewers are being sold an image that doesn't exist in reality, even if the "sport" has become popular.
But, given that money is involved, very little compared to the NFL, for example, they should be tested for ALL drugs.

Pretty simple, you sign a contract to be part of the WSL and have to abide by their rules. WSL is their boss. IF you boss says no drugs and you pee positive, I'm sure there will be a price to pay. Plenty of these guys live in places where recreational drugs are legal but if you play the game you gotta play by the big boss rules.

That said, I miss steroids in baseball... those were the days.

yeah, the first thing I thought is that they (WSL) are trying to "legitimize" professiona surfing so they can sell it...Olympics, TV, whatever, yeah marketing all about the money

There is a company called SD Labs that test my drugs. Usually 25-29% THC.

I get testing for preformance inhancing drugs but not the natural stuff. That being said they signed a contract I suppose they have to abide. They should tuck a vile of their pregnant sisters piss in their baggies just in case. Just one more reason to hate pro surfing for me.

yea I don't think we need to worry about surfers on steroids..however I'm sure theres guys on tour that smoke.now I agree, that with a high paying job as those guys got,u should be in top notch shape, but I don't condone it.

as far as this super hero bs or role model whatever lol, just watch your television.watch a show, put on a movie, all the "cool" people always have cigarettes and drink.kids are influenced by everything.but people make their own decisions in life and learn on their own..its like saying kids that shoot up schools did it because they play too many violent videogames.theres bad influences everywhere, but that doesn't mean everyone is going to turn out bad.

whats funny is I been watching "king of the road" for those that don't know, its a skating thing.its awesome.its disgusting, its everything.anyway they are all pro skaters, same team as tony hawk bla bla...all these guys are lighting up on camera on the show, everyone, every team lol.and they always have beer.like they dont even hide it lol, they are rolling joints while their buddys trying to land a trick...and they fukin rip.again, bad influences lol,but I wouldn't worry about it

What kind of special wave enhancers are we talkin bout here? Are there such drugs that will make you surf like superman?
Ive surfed on acid a couple of times. Thirty some years ago of course. Not to condone the use of the substance, but in those metallic moments you become sharply in tune with your environment and senses. Took me to another level and consciousness in surfing. Ha! still effects me today. Granted, I am not a role model.
Maybe all surfers are on drugs like the old man said.

wsl is gay, no wonder they test. weed and surfing go hand in hand, anybody that tells you otherwise ain't doing it right. Let the golfers be golfers.

No, I don't agree with that. They may go together for some, but only for those that are druggies or corrupt. Many surfers are not.
Same goes in any venue of life.

alright everyone im making my own surfing league called the pjb doppers world tour, with the first spot on tour being the casino pier cocaine pro, followed by the folly beach bong blow out. then the honeyton herion users awarness pro.
the moster hole marijuana madness open. if you dont test positive for 3 or more drugs you're kicked out. in order to paddle out you have to have at-least two or more consumed. awards range from lifetime Budweiser supplies to free needles for life also dont forget free trips to Afghanistan so you can go on a dope smoking tour with local afgani professional licenced tour guides. the opening contest is the oceanside oxycondone smokers surf n smash open all are welcome over the age of 10.

I'm digging ur new tour.funny thing is most of the contests are sponsored by beer companies.everythings fine, drink as much as u want,go flip a car,run somebody over, but chilling in ur house or on the beach after a surf and taking a few tokes is going overboard.

a few pro contests id like to mention....

Christian fletcher beat tom curren at pipeline while high on lsd.
fletcher beat slater at trestles after smoking a z between heats.
Michael Peterson, and a bunch of those old legend ozzies were all smotheads too.oh yea Michael and derek ho,2 more big potheads(in their day) father of mason and coco ho.its just an after activity, now if ur showing up to heats nodding out and shyt like that, then yea give them the boot.
