Of course it was economic based. I never said it wasn't. However, using the topic in a discussion about freedom is just wrong. The war wasn't really about freedom from law. The south wanted freedom to take freedom away from others. They were protecting their industries at the cost of human freedom. To use succession of the civil war in an the conversation in this thread is pure BS. That was my only issue.

Did you really claim that, because you played dress-up and reenacted a couple battles, means you know what it was like during the civil war? Well sh1t, tell all those historians that have researched this for their whole lives that they are doing it all wrong.

Native Americans were used/sold as slaves for a period of time in the colonial days. They were not as cheap/easy to obtain/plentiful as Africans as time progressed.

BBG, you hate the federal government...

    You like states' rights.

If the Fed didn't exist, every state would turn into their own "Federal government." And guess what, they'd tax and oppress you too.

Sorry, but MIS-13's utopian anarchy, based upon good will and volunteer charity wouldn't work. You guys know that people have been around for awhile and people have had ideas and tried things.

It wouldn't work. And MIS-13, I'm the biggest dreamer around. I'll out-dream John Lennon any day. But I can make the distinction between reality and a dream.

Oh I went Italian hunting the other day. Got a big 350 pounder. 38 pointer..........He'll make some good eatin'

Disclaimer: For those who don't follow, I did NOT go hunting Italian-Americans. This was all for entertainment purposes. No Italians, Puerto Ricans, Irish or Polish were harmed during the posting of this thread.

    Stop shooting deer !!

Dudes, it's so warm out. It's like 55 F.............I feel like I'm in Florida......

Like Brew told you playing dress up for a batlle reenactment does not give you insight into what the causes were for the war. I never said you were wrong that states rights was a reason for the war and yes it was a big one but you narrow mindly stated it was THE reason period end no if's and's or butts. Then you say there were too many causes so it is easier to just lable it as states rights, what a cop out. And also there are many books written by southerners (not the winners of the war) so saying history is one sided is just plain ignorant. This just further shows what whiny little douches you and 95% of your generation are. You play dress up, watch a TV show on something and suddenly you know it all. If you are truely representative of the youth of today then I weep for our future. Get your lazy a$$ up and do something to help the world rather than being a baby and asking the froum what to do with your life. Do you think the "pioneers" of science, medicine, engineering and other great minds of our past "polled" the masses before they did something or asked hey guys what should I do with my life, I'm in a tornado of torment, oh boo fu(kin hoo! No they were real men and blazed their own trail. One day you will look back and realize how much of a little panty waist b!tch you sound like. Now get a hair cut and get a real job or education!

your twisting my words.. i said i know what its like.. not that i know everything about the war and the reasons it started.. quite frankly i know very little about it I just like to debate but I'm lack in skills in that department.. wheres the "slowly and awkwardly back out of this conversation because I've realized i don't know what I'm talking about button" located?

I'm very glad you are offened Jr. Maybe that will light a fire under your a$$ to get a life and quit asking others what they think you should do with your life. You stated that you knew what it was like in those time due to your experience with reenactments in response to my comment that you oversimplified the cause of the war. Therefore you were using that as a defense for your assertion that the war was in your words about states rights no if's and's or butts. You then said that the history books were written by the winner (The North) and therefore cited slavery as the cause. I then pointed out that history was also told from the Southern point of view and was not just written by the winners so both sides took their own view of the cause that we now know to be narrow minded. As I said before there were at least 5-6 if not more reasons the war started.

Even if you were born into my generations mess why would you whine about it? Like I said get off your lazy a$$es and do something about it. Keep in mind it is your generation represented by that kardashian and Jersey Shore trash so you guys are the ones prepetuating that sh!t not my generation. My generation, 35-45 year olds are the ones being interviewd on the Hostory channel, Nat geo, BBC and other shows, not the 16-23 year old punks watching MTV and that sh!t.

Again bullsh!t backtracking your generation is famous for! Own up to what you meant. You used that in response to me criticizing your dumbing the cause of the war down to one point. Your opening post to this thread showed you to be the quintessential poster boy for your generation, everyone please tell me what to do, everyone please listen to my tweets and status updates because I'm so cool and you should care about me. You guys are fu(king obsessed with telling others what you are doing to get their feedback and admiration but then turn around and say man we don't care what others think about us. What a crock of two faced bull $hit!

Oh and that "back out of the conversation cause you don't know what your talking about button" is the X in the right corner of the screen, that will close your browser so you can stop making your generation look like idiots since you admitted you know very little about why the war started and lack the skills in that department. Now go back and take another bong hit, call mommy and daddy for some money and watch your cartoons while the grown ups have a discussion.

I haven't read every page so I'm not sure if someone mentioned it before but look into becoming a paid firefighter. Most paid positions have a sweet ass schedule. Example: 24 hour shift followed by 2 days off. Good amount of vacation time, medical/dental benefits and a pension to keep paying you when you retire after 25-30 years. The medical/dental and pension are things that are getting taking away or reduced as this economy creeps further into the ****ter so plan/save $ accordingly. If you remain single ($$), don't have kids ($$$) and live below your means (no fancy house or cars) you'll have the freedom and cash to surf consistantly into your old age. Of course, as with every job, there are downsides. #1 is ENTERING BURNING BUILDINGS!! If you can get over this fear then this job is an option. Back it up with a trade. Your two days off could be perfect time to make extra cash when the surf is flat or sucks. Pay for a boat trip or put towards retirement. The possibilities are endless. Good luck.

chill the eff out you old crank. i eat people like you for breakfast and i don't have a Facebook or twitter so whats that mean? sorry that I'm having trouble figuring out what i want to do in life. i though posting a thread and getting feedback from people who have life experience and similar interests would help but i forgot about the people that gain enjoyment by bashing on what others say/do. and i don't think i ever complained or whined in my beginning statement. I'm just simply stated my situation I'm not complaining about anything. and i think your getting a little to into this, rcarter. sit back and relax for a second. Now i thought that my come back was too much so i edited it. i realized i was arguing with some dude who I've never met about some subject thats beyond my knowledge. but a quick question for ya.. how am i the poster boy for the whole generation? i think your a wee bit grumpy today and have no better alternative but to take out on me

hey man don't worry about all these negative old codgers on here it takes a certain amount of guts to ask in public a hard question like you asked about life and the direction thereof. I'm sure alot of the negative nancys berating you didn't ask enough questions of their peers when they were deciding between a 4 year hitch and college. The right place depends on you as a person. Both avenues can be gateways to a bright future, true. But only one choice would require you to be part of an institution, The US Defense establishment, that has since been taken over by neo-conservitaliberal regime changers in a "policy coup", says former 4-Star General Wesley Clark.

This video of Wesley Clark talking about this is pure gold: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nUCwCgthp_E

1st sentence: "im in a tornado of torrent watching the ground way below me as i spiral out of control", whiny little baby self absorbed statement. You are at a crossroads as we all have been and will be numerous times in life, deal with it, you are not in a tornado of torrent or in a glass box of emotions as Ron Burgundy was, you have a choice to make and a fairly easy one at that. You furthur show your self absorbed nature by saying I still want to be able to surf all the time. Well Jr. life is about making choices, you say you are going to look at schools in Cali, great, does that school have a good program for what you want to major in or is is just close to the beach where you got some buddies? Picking a school based on nearby surf is stupid and short cited (yes guys posts threads on here all the time about that crap) and is the last thing you shoudl think about when picking a college. Then you ask folks you have never met and who don't know anything about you what you should do with your life? Really!? Ask your parents, sibilings, friends and those who know you toher than an internet persona for advice and it would be more helpful. All of the advice you got here you should have already known or you suggested (get a job, got to school, goin the military) there were no new great revelations to be found. the fact that none of us know you or your life experiences is the reason this thread went from what you should do with your life to another civil war debate. You may not have facebook or twitter but you are still seekng validation for your choice here from the forum. Only you can decide what is right for you. As for bashing what you say, you must not have spent much time around here huh, make a stupid comment like the war was only about states rights, no if's and's or butts and yeah you are gonna catch some sh!t for a narrow minded statement like that.

Oh and don't edit your come backs, I can take it, say what you want to and mean what you say, it's called being a man!
