ok ive ridden: surftech first gen. hated it. feels like garbage. original resin 8, thing is bullet proof rides well, flexes well, feels great, 6 years later, rocks, pipes, surf trips, and many brutal poundings later it has a few dings. js parabolic epoxy board again great board great feel, snaps back on cutbacks with the carbon fiber, no problem with durability actually pretty resistant to pressures. george wilson eps board great board but left a little to be desired in durability but it was second hand no idea how old to be fair but doesnt seem incredibly more durable than a poly. firewire fst really durable lots of float. more so for sure than resin 8 or any of the others except the surftech. def a better feel than that but its an odd shape so hard to compare it to the others. anyone have experience with xtr, hydroflex, coil, and futureflex? im looking for a board thats really durable like resin 8 doesnt get pressure marks easy, doesnt ding easy, still retains some nice feel doesnt feel like a cork like surftech. firewire is durable but it seems pretty corky too. a little extra float isnt a bad thing though i can take it into consideration with dims. im trying to get a pretty thinned out small hp shortboard. my 5'8" 1.9" 17.9" uncle mike round tail pro is destroyed and i love that board. i know hydroflex works with his shapes. lets pretend money is not an option bc im tired of destroying these boards id rather get something like my resin 8 that lasts and i dont have to worry about babying it. i think that covers all details. let me know any thoughts
Had an XTR a while ago. Loved the characteristics of the construction. Super light, durable, no need to freak out if you get a ding in the water. Didnt like the shape though (shaped by Javi, the owner/ founder of XTR). These days I'm all in on Coil. Have 5 Coil boards that I've accumulated over the last 4 years. In my experience, they've been bomb-proof. Other than minor pressure marks, the ONLY ding I've ever had that needed repair was when I let my kid use it to sled (thats how confident I am in the contruction) and he went a bit too fast and flew into the street onto the pavement, and it was so minor i debated fixing it at all after reading Mike's repair suggestions on Swaylocks. They are all still bright white as well. All that and the flex of a poly board. They're not much more expensive than any other board (about $750 shipped), but there's around a 3 month wait for customs now. Coil shapes I have are the Megamind, Bloop, M80, Widerboard, & Flashback fish.
After owning a few EPS boards, I'm pretty much sworn off them. However, I've been considering Hydroflex "Natural" because it's epoxy glass over standard PU foam. Reviews are that HN (in standard "Apex" glass schedule) is significantly lighter than a comparable PU/PE board, but not so much that it compromises the weight range/balance needed for proper momentum. As far as durability, it does pressure dent almost as easily as PE glass, but it doesn't crack as easily and, because the resin is vacuumed into the foam, it never delams. If you absolutely have to have EPS foam, pretty sure your only choice is their "Supercharger" construction (involves a valve and is more expensive). Combined with EPS, I'm guessing their "Triple-X" glassing schedule will give you the durability you want and will also improve the weight balance you need.
if it's that big a deal, Supercharger allows you to inflate the board to remove pressure dents...but, yeah, you can't do that with Hydroflex Natural
I emailed coil and called a few times to get a board made. I was going down to satellite beach FL to my moms beach house and wanted to stop by to put a deposit down or pick up a board there. No response. Hopefully you have better luck than I did.
Hi I like this site its a master peace. Glad i discovered this on google. You efforts to provide us so nice and useful information are pretty good.
