That's a pretty cool article. I checked surfline last night to see if they did a article on this swell but didn't see anything. I didn't get out on Friday since I had work early and the unplowed roads would of made it pretty difficult to get to work on time if I surfed. I should of called out, I'm kicking myself in the backside for that. Saturday was a whole hell of alot of fun though. The cold really isn't that bad though, I don't know if you get used to the cold or if you just deal with it but it didn't bother me to much. I came out of the water with ice chunks in my beard. Either way it's cool to get recognition for braving such conditions. Saturday I was surfing alone. Not the biggest I've surfed but deffinitly one of the best days Iv ever surfed. No closeouts, no crumbly sections to get around, just perfect chest high peelers. Alone. That's what surfing in the NE is all about.

Went Friday at 8 AM in a 5/3 and even with an air reading of 3 degrees, it really wasn't that bad once I was in. I would have to agree with an earlier post here...seeing snow kind of changes the mind set, it does make it more difficult to get "excited". But once you're in it's game on and you don't notice...but I did notice the brim of my hood get frozen completely solid - just made me laugh.

I grew up swimming though (through college and still continue to) and I have to say I prefer cooler temps (air & water). I find it really easy to get over heated. Would I prefer sunny & 80* and not being shrink-wrapped - absolutely! But waves are waves and were you live is where you live, and there is no way I am ever hitting the slopes. I enjoy water in it's liquid state, I don't care much for pretense, runs might be different but hills they stay the same, the closest slope is 2 hours & the closest beach is 20 min, it costs way too much for a lift not to mention rentals or buying.

I live on the coast, therefore I surf.

Wetsuit technology is too good these days . . Its really not as crazy as they make it out to be. I'm very comfortable in the water, only problem is when the wind is howling my face gets cold.

Its not as crazy as you would think. I don't think all that much of it, besides the getting changed part. That's a strategy all its own. But you stay warmer than you think with a little bit of paddling, and you can turn your back and face away from the chilling wind. I was with the photographer CJ Cronin who has two pics in the surfline feature. We got it good. I think he has pic #15 and like #24

Vote Rcarter in 2014 Because if we all work together we can all hate everybody.

After taking a look at some of your surf pics. I would agree winter surf is not for you.

Oh yeah, which would those be, d-bag? I don't take "surf pics". Have you not grown up yet and decided to stop trolling me on this forum? I surf all winter long, since our water stays quite comfortable. Do you?

Actually 40 degree water, 15 degree air temps and 40MPH winds is brutal anywhere. The water in Nova Scotia is about 4-5 degrees colder. Otherwise it's pretty similar.

You know what is interesting is that modern technology has killed(is killing) the professional surf photographer. Jesus, every time you look around there's a NEW photographer in the game. There must be 100,000,000 photographers just in Jersey alone......and they all get there stuff published on Surfline.

"........., said 16-year-old New Jersey Photographer......." Jeez, now 16-year-olds are getting props. Seth Stafford just cringed.

I swear some of those pictures weren't from this past Friday/Saturday. Never believe the internet nor the media.

And come on guys, don't be so modest. It was cold Friday and Saturday morning. You felt it. You can say it was cold, and still be El Burro Mas Macho. Acting completely immune from the affects of such weather is a bit unbelievable. I'm not saying you can only last twenty minutes, but you feel the cold.

And you know, I never bought the stories of dudes surfing all day in 20 F air temps and 39 F water. " Yeah man, we were out for 5 hours and then drank hot cocoa and went out another 4 hours...." Ahh, the magical power of hot chocolate. More like the warming properties of adderall.

And THIS WINTER hasn't been brutally cold, but it's had pockets of brutally cold weather. And each of these outbreaks have been peppered by 45-55 F rebounds. Like, it's going to be just shy of 60 F by the weekend. That's almost 60 F as mid-January approaches.........that does not define a brutally cold winter.

Brewengineer, don't sell yourself short, man.

the term "brutal" is justified by your vaginitis. If it is so "brutal" why paddle out? So you can talk about how core you are?

Very funny sir. I didn't make this thread, nor did I say how core I was. I just pointed out that 40 degree water and 15 degree air is cold. If you don't think so you're a liar. Or maybe you're just stupid, tough guy.

And just to clarify. You said Nova Scotia is "brutal." The temps in NJ,NY, MA are similar. So I guess you have vaginitis.

I've surfed new england winters for three years or so and been out in february and march in ri and ma. With the 654 7mm goves and mittens I'm good for 2 hrs. You don't want to get caught inside though or you'll get a severe brain freeze for 45 secs. its nice being out there and saying "what a unique experience". Think about the percentage of humans who enjo y surfing let alone in such conditions.

yeah, I would say I have vaginitis, being tough on this forum and all. Cause im a puss in regular life.

I just find it humorous how one day of seriously cold temps in the mid-atlantic (and even southern new england) makes one(or surf site featured) consider winter surfing to be "brutal" or the surfer to be "insane."

The point I was making was surfers in the great white north endure these "brutal" conditions weekly. For christs sake, the average winter air temp in here in Rhody is high twenties-low thirties with water in the high thirties-low fortys, which in a modern suit feels like summer with the occasional slap in the face. Nova Scotia's air is about 10-20 degrees colder with water in the low to mid thirties. (Which by the way, is much different than New Jersey)

Sure I have been uncomfortably cold a whole bunch, but to east coast winters are insane is overkill. Most of the time we aren't in life or death hypothermic situations here people.

I'm pretty sure most here surf through the winter with out much complaint. The reason there was a discussion was that air temp was 15 degrees with 40 mph offshores. Same as Nova Scotia, which you said was brutal. So you're really not making any sense. You tried to take a shot at me while proving my point

Just get a good wetsuit and your all set I really like the culture here too we are all connected in the way for our interests and are all surfing in "extreme" conditions. waters a lot warmer then the air too which makes the water feel kinda nice I guess but anyways who cares what the temp is, if there's waves go surf!

The one you posted of yourself in your Santa hat God awful. Look like a banker who surfs 12x a year and gets off on debunking theories. Who is a troll? Takes a troll to know one.
