Unfortunately this is how most Americans think these days, just take take take and leave their trash behind. People dont feel the need to be polite or show any respect no matter where they are. They just show show up and act like they own the place, get wasted and leave their garbage wherever they please. The general population is a bunch of a$$holes, thats just how it is. You just have to deal with it in your own way, either try and keep them in check or just ignore it cause its never gonna change...

Sad to say but most tourists - vacationers do not give a rats a$$ about locals. They are spending their money to have as much fun as possible and feel entitled to do what they want with little to no respect for others. There are so many things I hate about summer but in reality - these ignorant pukes keep a majority of shore communities afloat. When I was a kid my family had summer businesses that depended on tourists. Everybody hated the French Canadians - they were the worst. Now, I just try to steer clear

so...when we're traveling as turistas to surf the so-called developing world are we any different? i know a lot of guys on here travel - do we give a rat's ass about the (surfing and non-surfing) locals in CR, PR, DR or wherever? how do we show our love? what do you do? ever leave a board behind? stickers? cash for a soulful granny who knows how to dance? stds for her pikni? show a local grom how to get a seed to pop? curious to hear about the international side of it...:)

OK, I'll go on this one. (Despite Senor Cresto & I not having the most glowing online vibe.)

Never told this story to anyone. However, you guys who travel may appreciate it more than others.

I gave a 9'6 RA WIR board, leash, fin to a lifeguard in Barbados. Local dude, wife, kid, very good surfer, just a good person IMHO who teaches surfing for a living. He was borrowing boards to teach. Borrowing didn't always turn out so well for him. So, I figured, I have many boards in my house, what is wrong with me, I can only surf one stick at a time, here's an opportunity to make a difference. I felt great seeing this man's joy & I still correspond with him. That board is enabling the guy to work hard, giving lessons & thus feed his family.

Another one: trek to Nicaragua with a few guys. One of our crew was really cheap. He had money, he makes good money, he's just tight but still a good guy. Deep pockets, short arms.

After a very little time it got old hearing him trying to figure out how to split the tip on the damn bill when it's less than 10 usd, wtf rover.

So, the day comes, trip's over, we leave Iguana & we're driving up to MGA for the flight home. I ask Eddie how many cords he has left. He says about 90 usd worth; gonna change it at the airport for greenbacks. I ask if that 90 bucks is already budgeted for the trip & Eddie says sure, this trip was way cheaper than I figured on & flashes his big smile.

    Great, Eddie !

Hey, he says, why are you pulling over here. Because Eddie, here's 400 cords from me, I want you to give this money to that old lady right there. Wha...????? Just do it, Eddie. We drive off after the gift, the lady is just beaming after I told her (en Espanol) that this is a gift to her from Americans, please have a wonderful day.

Eddie's quiet. Then all of a sudden, he shouts hey pull over at those guys up ahead. Why, Eddie? 'Cause I want to give them some money, that was so cool the look on that lady's face.

And that's what we did for the next hour on the way to MGA. Eddie went through his 90 bucks & then some. Eddie's a changed man, and I'm not making this up. It was powerful stuff. Sharing your good fortune with others who aren't as fortunate always is.

I also, unwillingly, donated several leashes, two fins, wax & anything else in the unlocked board coffin when it went through Miami airport a few years ago. Scum baggage handling thieves....

But reposting this topic does not change the minds of the thousands of people that will continue to come to the shore each year. It may change the minds of a fifty (if that) of those that visit this site. If anything, I should have just said hit the search button and look at the same threads of your topic.

My dad back in college bought this old longboard and never surfed it once but just kept it strapped to the roof. He was considering just literally putting holes in it and screwing it into the roof rack

maybe. but to paraphrase a movie (i forget which one): the only thing bad behavior needs to flourish is the indifference of good men.

point being, if you do nothing, nothing will change. if you take action, if you refuse to accept bad behavior, things still might not change. then again, they just might. you won't know unless you try. apathy, to me, is worse than beligerance.

    yankee, that's an awesome story!

generosity is an undervalued trait these days...when i travel, i try to scrounge up some swag from the shop & give it to the locals while i'm there...t-shirts & stickers mostly; school supplies or baseball gear if i'm heading to morro negrito in panama. the kids on the island are nuts for baseball!

I'm assuming you're one of those ppl with a brand spankin new board.... aka the kook who says "nice pics you have posted."

Sorry I don't have a personal photographer, and those are LITERALLY the ONLY pics that have ever been taken of me and they're on a small day? Guess I'll have to get my cool friends to sit on the beach and document everything I do in the water so I'm cool enough for you....kook
